Rangers sign All-Star pitcher Mike Foltynewicz
The Texas Rangers signed former All-Star pitcher Mike Foltynewicz to a one-year deal, the club announced Wednesday.
Terms were not disclosed but it's reportedly worth $2 million. The Rangers designated outfielder Adolis García for assignment to make room for Foltynewicz on the roster.
The Atlanta Braves designated Foltynewicz for assignment after just one start last season, and the 29-year-old spent the rest of the 2020 season at the team's alternate training site.
The one start was disastrous for Foltynewicz, as he gave up six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in a 14-5 loss to Tampa Bay on July 27. Folytnewicz's fastball averaged just 89 mph against the Rays, down from 95 mph in 2019.
Foltynewicz recorded at least 10 wins in back-to-back seasons in 2017-18 and was a National League All-Star in 2018, when he set career bests in wins (13), ERA (2.85), innings (183.0), and strikeouts per nine innings (9.9). Foltynewicz started four of Atlanta's nine Division Series games in 2018-19.
For his career, he is 44-42 with a 4.33 ERA in 138 games (118 starts) with the Houston Astros (2014) and Braves.
Foltynewicz joins a potential rotation consisting of Kyle Gibson, Jordan Lyles, Kohei Arihara, Dane Dunning and Kyle Cody.
