QB Trace McSorley says Kyler Murray ‘sees the game in a way many can’t’

A lot has been said about Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. No one doubts his talent. Some, though, criticize his preparation.

Much of that stems from a comment he made in an interview with the New York Times.

“I think I was blessed with the cognitive skills to just go out there and just see it before it happens,” Murray said. “I’m not one of those guys that’s going to sit there and kill myself watching film. I don’t sit there for 24 hours and break down this team and that team and watch every game because, in my head, I see so much.”

Many take this as saying he doesn’t watch film. It is foolish to think that. He doesn’t spend as much time as other quarterbacks might.

But perhaps there is something to what he said about his cognitive skills. His teammate, quarterback Trace McSorley, said Murray has a special feel and perspective on the game.

“Kyler can see the game in a way many can’t,” McSorley said, according to Kevin Parrish Jr. for the official team site. “He can see where he wants guys to be within concepts and the routes and is always trying to attack defenses. He’s always trying to make the big play and always trying to make something happen. He’s good at it, and it benefits him and our offense very well.”

Murray enters his fourth NFL season and has accomplished a lot in three seasons. He was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 after he was selected first overall in the draft by the Cardinals. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl two straight seasons. He looked like an MVP for a stretch of 2020 and for half of last season.

Now the question is whether he can take the leap and become one of the league’s elite quarterbacks and sustain that for an entire season.
