It's probably time to stop the Kim Ng-to-Mets speculation

The Mets have a vacancy at general manager, and Kim Ng recently left that job with the Miami Marlins. But according to multiple industry sources, the speculation linking Ng and the Mets is not rooted in reality.

On Friday, Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive reported that Ng declined to interview for Boston. That led to renewed questions about Ng and the Mets, but the industry perception is that Ng is far more likely to step briefly away from baseball executive opportunities.

“I doubt she has any interest in the Mets,” said one person who has spoken with Ng.

Ng did not immediately respond to a text message. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns declined to comment on any aspect of his search for an executive.

Ng’s husband, Tony Markward, is a winemaker and owner of Silas Wines in Amity, Oregon. It is currently grape harvest season in Oregon.

Ng recently left the Marlins after owner Bruce Sherman told her that he wanted to hire a president of baseball operations to rank above her.

The Mets lack a GM because of Billy Eppler’s sudden resignation this month in the wake of an MLB investigation into alleged violations of injured list rules.

The view from here is that the Mets would be best served by naming a former player, coach, or veteran of the scouting community as GM, which would help to create a greater diversity of thought in Steve Cohen’s organization.

The Mets need not be in any rush to fill the GM vacancy, because they have in Stearns a head of baseball operations.
