Beardstown’s Hernandez scores hat trick in win

RIVERTON — Guillermo Hernandez netted a hat trick and assisted another goal in Beardstown’s 4-0 boys soccer victory over Riverton in the Four Corners Classic on Wednesday.

Exauce Mulumba assisted Hernandez’s first goal in the opening eight minutes before Hernandez found Cesar Rodriguez four minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Mulumba assisted Hernandez’s second goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Joshua Severino had the other assist for the Tigers. Darren Lopez garnered five saves.

Williamsville won the tournament’s other match of the day, 2-0 over Sacred Heart-Griffin. Reid Bodine scored the go-ahead goal for the Bullets, who improved to 2-0 overall.

Hillsboro claims Kickoff Classic title

CARLINVILLE — Mark Mattson delivered the go-ahead goal and Hillsboro won the Carlinville Kickoff Classic championship match, 2-1 over Raymond Lincolnwood.

In the third-place game, Will Meyer notched his fourth goal of the season via penalty kick en route to Carlinville’s 1-0 victory over Litchfield.

VOLLEYBALL

Mount Pulaski falls to SHG

MOUNT PULASKI — Alyson Murphy produced five kills and 12 digs in Mount Pulaski’s 25-15, 25-17 nonconference loss to Sacred Heart-Griffin.

Ella Bobell delivered nine assists while Kamri Charron had four kills for the Hilltoppers.

GIRLS GOLF

Hassebrock, SHG claim team title

Izzy Hassebrock shot 1-over-par 37 and shared co-medalist honors with Rochester’s Kiley Torres to lead Sacred Heart-Griffin to a team title in a triangular at Panther Creek Country Club.

Natalie Zak registered a 38 and the Cyclones finished with a 161. Maddy Johnston (42) and Layden Tamblin (44) rounded out the team score.

14 boys and girls cross country runners to watch in the Springfield area this fall

Rochester’s Isabel Tom followed with a 39 to give the Rockets a team score of 179. Chatham Glenwood was third with 221.

IN OTHER NEWS: KRISTILYN LEVORA fired a 48 for medalist honors at a triangular at Litchfield Country Club.

GIRLS TENNIS

SHG rolls over Jacksonville

Sacred Heart-Griffin won all but won match for the 8-1 Central State Eight Conference victory over Jacksonville.

MK Christie won No. 1 singles over Jacksonville’s Molly Turner, 6-1, 6-1. Katherine Karns took No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0 over Bella Summers.

Caroline Sheehan and Lily White gained a 6-0, 7-5 win over Summers and Hailey Collins in No. 1 doubles.

Plains stays unbeaten with rally over Taylorville

PLEASANT PLAINS — Pleasant Plains dropped the first set, but rallied to defeat Taylorville in three sets 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 in a nonconference volleyball match on Tuesday to stay unbeaten.

Jordan Butcher led Plains with nine kills as the Cardinals improved to 8-0. Sydney McAfee and Anna Cormeny chipped in eight kills apiece and Claire Long totaled a match-high 19 assists. Paige Weatherford gathered nine digs and Anna Weber accumulated six blocks for Plains.

Alayna Vincent led Taylorville (1-2) with eight kills, 12 digs and three service aces in the loss.

Walters, Bullets down Mount Pulaski

WILLIAMSVILLE — Britni Walters racked up 10 kills and teammate Riley Holliday provided 16 assists as Williamsville defeated Mount Pulaski 25-10, 25-15 in a nonconference matchup.

Holliday led Williamsville (4-1) with seven digs and Brianna Walters had a match-high three aces. Anna Stuenkel finished with two blocks in the win.

Kamrie Charron tallied four kills and three digs for Mount Pulaski (1-1).

Cowhick produces in Pretzels’ win

EDINBURG — Kaylee Cowhick compiled 13 assists and served three aces to lead New Berlin past Edinburg 25-17, 25-20 in a nonconference match.

Halle Bandy and Layla Hein had six kills each and Marissa Heironimus added five for New Berlin. Dakota Knox finished with 13 digs for the Pretzels (3-0).

IN OTHER NEWS: Lincoln defeated Southeast 25-7, 25-10 in a Central State Eight Conference match at Herb Scheffler Gym. JAYLA DAVIS had nine kills and AREONNA CRAINE ended with 10 assists to pace Southeast (0-2). Lincoln improved to 3-0. … JESS VAUGHN put down five kills and ALEXIS COLEMAN added four in Pana’s 25-17, 25-14 win over Vandalia in nonconference play at Pana. IZZY REED notched eight assists for the Panthers (2-1). … ADDISON GLENN and MACKENZIE MEHOCHKO finished with eight kills apiece to lead Nokomis past host Gillespie 26-24, 25-14 in a nonconference meeting. Mehochko led with 11 digs and KINLEY STOLTE recorded a match-high 16 assists for Nokomis (4-0). … Petersburg PORTA defeated Jacksonville Routt 25-14, 25-20 in a nonconference match at Ashland. ... Davis flourishes for SHG

RIVERTON — Tom Davis recorded three goals and one assist to help Sacred Heart-Griffin defeat Riverton 5-0 at the Williamsville Tournament in a boys soccer game.

Davis scored the first goal of the game, and he assisted on teammate Andrew Drennan’s goal to give SHG a 2-0 lead at the half. Davis added a goal in the second half off a penalty kick and his final score was unassisted.

SHG’s Ashwin John scored and Kaden Smith finished with two assists. Goalie Cannon Duke registered six saves for the Cyclones (3-0).

Sullivan lifts Rochester to OT win

JACKSONVILLE — Landon Kutscher and Lach Sullivan each scored and Rochester clipped Jacksonville 2-1 in overtime in Central State Eight Conference play.

Sullivan scored the game-winner in extra time and the Rockets improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Jacksonville’s Anderson Decker tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the second half.

White sends Hillsboro to title game

CARLINVILLE — Tony White scored the lone goal at 15 minutes 7 seconds of the second half and Hillsboro defeated Carlinville 1-0 to advance to the championship game of the Carlinville Kickoff Classic.

Goalie Mitchell Lowe preserved the shutout for Hillsboro, registering 14 saves.

Hillsboro plays Raymond Lincolnwood for the title at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Carlinville. Lincolnwood shut out Staunton 5-0 on Tuesday to reach the title match.

In other games scheduled for Wednesday, Carlinville plays Litchfield, which beat North Mac 5-0, at 5 p.m. for third place at Carlinville. Lutheran defeated Athens 6-3 and the Crusaders meet Staunton in the fifth-place game at 7 p.m. at North Mac.

For seventh place at North Mac, Athens plays North Mac at 5 p.m.

IN OTHER NEWS: BRAMAIH KANU, CARTER MURPHY and DAVID SEBASTIAN each scored unassisted in Southeast's 6-3 loss to Peoria High.

BOYS GOLF

Glenwood wins on tiebreak score

Chatham Glenwood and Springfield High both shot a 155, but Glenwood won the triangular meet on a tiebreaker that included Sacred Heart-Griffin at Lincoln Greens Golf Course.

Brayden Mueller’s fifth-place score of 42 for Glenwood was one shot better than Springfield High’s James Maeda, giving the Titans the victory.

Springfield’s Jacob Jenkins and SHG’s Augustine Hyde shared medalist honors with each shooting a 1-under-par 35. The Cyclones (0-2) finished third with 159.

Cam Appenzeller led Glenwood (2-0) with a 36, followed by teammates Drew Downen (38), Brock Bredehoft (40) and Brayden Sayarath (41).

Carter Beck had a 38, and James Oh and Julian Valenti each had 41s for Springfield (1-1).

Schwabs, Odle propels Litchfield

LITCHFIELD — Sam Schwab, Tug Schwab and AJ Odle each had a solid round and Litchfield won a five-team boys golf meet by 15 strokes at Litchfield Country Club.

Sam Schwab led Litchfield with a 1-over-par 36 and Odle fired a 37. Tug Schwab added a 38 and Tucker Maguire ended with a 40 as the Purple Panthers collected a team score of 151.

Conner McCall of Vandalia won medalist honors with a 1-under 34 and the Vandals were second with 166. Raymond Lincolnwood shot a 172, followed by Gillespie (196) and Taylorville (203).

IN OTHER NEWS: Lincoln’s TALON HORTON shot a 5-over-par 40 and teammate BRADY MILLER followed with a 41, but the Railers lost a dual meet to Mount Zion 167-182 at the Lincoln Elks Golf Course. CONNOR GRAVES carded a 39 and was medalist for Mount Zion.

GIRLS GOLF

Williamsville wins quad

Williamsville finished with a team score of 195 and defeated Rochester, Pleasant Plains and Chatham Glenwood in a quadrangular girls golf meet at The Rail Golf Course on Tuesday.

Zoey Beard led Williamsville with a 7-over-par 43. Medalist Alaina Ervin finished with a 39 and Pleasant Plains was third with a score of 204. Kiley Torres ended with a 40 to lead Rochester to second place with a 202.

Glenwood placed fourth with 219.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Bandy leads South County to second

JACKSONVILLE — Chris Bandy cracked the top 10 and South County earned second place at the Jacksonville Kickoff Meet.

He finished in 18 minutes, 17.26 seconds while teammate Marshall Bowman was 11th in 18:18.64.

Quincy took the team title out of seven teams. Andrew Schumacher (19:09.92) led Jacksonville in 16th place.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Burger wins Jacksonville meet

JACKSONVILLE — South County’s Madigan Burger raced to first place overall in 19:31.75 at the Jacksonville Kickoff Meet.

The Vipers settled for fourth place out of five teams. Piasa Southwestern’s Emma Wyman was second in 19:54.90.
