Prep roundup: Howell's Zach Spencer shoots 3-under to win opening tournament
Howell junior Zach Spencer shot 3-under-par 69 to finish first out of 130 golfers in the season-opening Westborn Market tournament Monday at Oakland University.
Spencer made four birdies and one bogey to edge Detroit Catholic Central sophomore Jack Whitmore by one stroke.
Spencer’s round led Howell to a second-place finish in the 26-team field with a score of 295. The Highlanders were eight shots behind Catholic Central, which put four golfers in the top eight.
Gavin Hill tied for 13th with a 74, while Luke Downing and Derek Kantola tied for 23rd with 76s for Howell.
Brighton finished fifth with a 304.
Riley Morton tied for ninth with a 73, Jacob Daavettila tied for 23rd with a 76, Adam Forcier tied for 30th with a 77 and Mitchell Stoll tied for 37th with a 78 for Brighton.
Eaton Rapids 183, Fowlerville 191
Jon Harmon led Fowlerville with a 45.

Baseball
Hartland 13, Plymouth 3
Trailing 3-0, Hartland scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Brayden Crowe was 5-for-5 with three RBIs, Brady Quinn was 3-for-4 and Logan Passeggiato had three RBIs for Hartland.
Northville 5, Brighton 0
Ryan Metz had two of Brighton’s four hits off Justin Brown, who struck out 10 batters in seven innings.
Novi 10, Howell 1
Novi’s Uli Fernsler, a Texas Christian University commit, threw a two-hitter and struck out 14 batters.
Linden 12, Pinckney 11
Evan McGlothin hit a home run, doubled and drove in three runs for Pinckney, which took a 7-6 lead with three runs in the fifth before allowing five in the sixth.
Freshman Jax Raymond was 3-for-4 for the Pirates.
The second game was tied 2-2 in the third inning when it was called by darkness.

Softball
Howell 9, Davison 0
Howell 8, Davison 5
Ava Lavery pitched her second straight shutout to win the opener, striking out eight, and allowed one run in three innings of relief to win the nightcap.
Howell’s Hannah Ramsden homered, doubled and was 3-for-3 in the first game. Lara Anderson drove in four runs, while Ava Bunting and Olivia Bunkoske each went 3-for-4.
Jada Challiss drove in three runs in the second game for the Highlanders.
Hartland 5, Novi 1
Sadie Malik went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs for Hartland (2-1). Olivia Forrest struck out 10 batters in seven innings.
The second game was called after three innings because of darkness with Hartland leading 7-2.
