Prep report: Superior tennis sweeps at home

Sep. 14—Superior girls tennis claimed a confident sweep, taking all seven of its matches in a home girls tennis dual vs. Duluth Marshall in Superior on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Sydney Friedrich of the Spartans won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while the team of Greta Clark and Lexi Johnsen of Superior led the way in doubles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The Hawks prevailed in a narrow LSC contest with the Hunters on Thursday.

Hermantown swept the three doubles points with relative ease, but got its lone singles point by a razor-thin margin, as Campbell Amundson edged Denfeld's Zaidea Kinziger 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1.

Denfeld won the other three singles matches in three sets apiece, getting wins from Maria Oppelt, Daria Devko and Anissa MacMillan.

Superior remained undefeated in Heart O'North play on a tough day to score on Nemadji Golf Course's East nine.

Autumn Cooper was medalist with a 43, while Rainah Morland, Tara Stratton and Brynn Johnson followed with 50, 51 and 52 respectively.

Superior will contest the conference championship tournament next week in Ladysmith going in alongside Hayward as undefeated teams.

Denzel Majwega had two goals and an assist as the Hilltoppers claimed a Lake Superior Conference road victory over the Rails on Thursday at Terry Egerdahl Field.

Briar Mrozik had the other goal and Thomas Falgier made three saves for Marshall (5-3).

The Hilltoppers won for the first time on their renovated home field, getting two goals apiece from Nina Thorson and Mariah Hernesman.

Abby Regstad had a pair of saves to earn a clean sheet in goal.

The duo of Alyssa Doyle and Luci Chastey did lots of work on Thursday at Walt Hunting Stadium-Marv Heikkinen Field, as they had a hand in all five Denfeld goals.

Doyle assisted the first two then scored the next two, both from Chastey assists. Chastey added a second goal to complete the scoring.

Esko went on the road for a shutout win at Corey Veech Field at Centricity Stadium, as Britta Koski led the way with a goal and assist.

Abrianna Madill and Kennadie Lammi had the visitors' other tallies as Esko upped its record to 6-1-2.

Ava Carlson came within one kill of 1,000 for her career as the Lumberjacks swept Proctor 25-18, 25-21, 25-9 in Cloquet on Thursday, Sept. 14.

She had a whopping 23 for the game, with help from some of Ella Maslowski's 14 assists and Carly Johnson's 12.

Four different Lumberjacks had at least two aces (led by Carlson's five) and five had at least four digs.

Cloquet (9-1) is on the Iron Range for its next two games, starting with a Tuesday trip to Rock Ridge.

Savanna Hering piled up 23 digs as the Spartans controlled their match with the Hunters, 25-16, 25-9, 25-13 on Thursday night, Sept. 14 in Duluth.

Kloe Zentkowski posted nine kills and Addy Lisdahl seven from some of Carlie Lohman's 30 assists.

The Tigers faced too much playing from behind and lost 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 in Hayward on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Shelby Hessel had seven kills and 11 digs, while Addi Hanson led the defense with 12 digs.

Claire Kaups led the Hawks in both kills (10) and digs (13) as they strolled to victory at home.

Abbey McCubbin (12 digs) and Gabi Arntson (eight kills were major contributors to a Hermantown squad that has won its first six matches.
