Prep report: East boys unable to complete comeback

Nov. 25—Duluth East outshot Shakopee 15-1 in the third period but could not find a tying goal on Saturday as the Sabers won 5-4 in The Opener, presented by Youth Hockey Hub, at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

The Sabres got a second-period hat trick, two of them on the power play, from Cooper Siegert to take a 5-3 lead into the third period after the teams started the frame tied at 1.

Noah Teng scored for the Greyhounds at 5:27, but that proved to be the end of the scoring.

Teng, Wyatt Peterson and Thomas Gunderson all finished with a goal and assist. Kole Kronstedt made 19 saves for East.

Three goals in succession, two scored and one assisted by Ethan Carter, lifted the Rails to a home win on Saturday.

Dylan Davidson broke a 2-2 tie just 42 seconds after it was formed early in the second period. Carter followed his primary assist with goals at 6:05 and 12:27 to extend the advantage.

Davidson and Tanner Ross both finished with a goal and two assists, while goaltender Brayden McLean had 16 saves.

Jake Stadler and Jacob Carpenter had four points apiece as the Storm opened their season with a rout at Sonju Arena in Two Harbors.

Stadler scored twice and added two assists, while Carpenter had a goal and three helpers.

Zach Bentler made 21 saves for his first career shutout. The Storm had a 31-21 shot advantage.

The Bluejackets learned a tough lesson on Saturday at the TRIA Turkey Day Classic in St. Paul from a Raiders team that reached the Class A state tournament last season.

Superior split a pair of games to open its season at the Tom Kislow Memorial Invitational in Schofield, Wisconsin.

The Spartans edged host D.C. Everest 64-59 on Friday night but fell 88-49 to Sussex Hamilton on day two.

Superior has its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 28 vs. St. Croix Central.
