Prep report: East boys edge Rock Ridge with power play goals

Jan. 27—A pair of power play goals proved enough for Duluth East to win a fourth consecutive game, this time 2-1 over Rock Ridge on Saturday at Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia.

Noah Teng staked East to a 1-0 lead with the man advantage in the first period, a goal that was the only one of the night until an unassisted power play tally from Kyle Peterson with 7:34 remaining.

Ian Mikulich scored about 90 seconds later for Rock Ridge, but East (8-11-1) held on behind 25 saves from Kole Kronstedt.

Ryan Rothfork made 25 saves for Rock Ridge.

A.J. Reyelts was equal to all 31 shots he faced as the Rails earned a shutout victory at the Tartan Arena in Oakdale on Saturday.

Wyatt Mineheine was the start of the day on the offensive end, scoring goals with about two minutes left in the second period and about two minutes into the third, both coming from primary assists by Carson Pavlowich. Tanner Ross had the other Proctor (14-6) goal, breaking a scoreless deadlock 10 minutes into the second period.

The Hawks were three seconds away from a win and came away with nothing for the day or the weekend on Saturday at Hermantown Arena.

Third-period goals by Weston Bohlman and Joshua Kauppinen 37 seconds apart gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead but Andrew Karkoc scored an extra-attacker goal for the Crimson with three seconds remaining and the role of overtime hero went to Maple Grove's Owen Smith, who scored 6:36 into a wild overtime period that had nearly as many combined shots on goal (16) as the teams had in the first 17 minutes (17).

Dane Callaway made 43 saves for Hermantown (12-6-2), which was outshot 46-30 and has last three of its last four.

Brady Haroldson scored for the Spartans on a first-period power play but the goalscoring tap was shut off from there as the Raiders won on their home rink in Hudson.

Gannon Blaiser scored the tying goal and added an assist for Hudson in a chippy game in which the teams combined for 20 minor penalties.

Trent Peterson made 42 saves for Superior (7-11-1), which was outshot 45-33.

Jameson Duell had an empty-net goal and two assists as the Thunderhawks spoiled the second half of St. Thomas's trip to the Northland on Saturday at Yanmar Arena.

The Thunderhawks held a 25-12 advantage in shots through two periods and converted that to the scoreboard, with Gus Drennen scoring for a 1-0 lead after one period, and Duell assisting Nathan Garski and Bauer Murphy (power play) in the second for a 3-0 edge after two.

Carter Casey stopped 20 shots for Rapids (12-9), which has won three consecutive games for the first time since the beginning of the season.

Benson Peterson scored a pair of goals for the Hilltoppers in a Saturday win at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Layton Anderson and Peterson scored in quick succession near the midpoint of the second period for a 2-0 Marshall lead, and though the Tigers pulled one goal back on a power play late in the frame, Marshall finished it off in the third on goals from Rienat Sukhonos and Peterson.

Kaenan Smith made 31 saves for the Hilltoppers (12-6-1), while Thomas Ojard and Bennett Scissons posted two assists apiece.

The Rebels scored four times in just over 10 minutes to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead, but gave up four unanswered goals as the Wolverines came away winners on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Wadena.

Carson Davis scored five times for the Wolverines, while Dalton Slama had two goals and two assists for Moose Lake Area (5-14). Eli Gilbertson made 31 saves in the defeat.

The Mirage scored three times in each of the first two periods in an early game Saturday at Hermantown Arena.

Avery Milbridge did the most damage for the Mirage (13-8-1), scoring twice, while Hannah Graves had three assists.

Mirage goalie Neelah McLeod made 41 saves for the shutout, while Ella Brisbois stopped 17 shots for the Northern Stars (9-13-1).

The Rebels fell victim to a Maysie Koch hat trick on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Dodge County Ice Arena.

Mallory Hartl finished with 46 saves for the Rebels (11-11-1), who were outshot 49-11.

Grand Rapids proved the value of strength in depth on Saturday during the Lake Superior Conference boys swim meet at Hibbing High School.

Duluth had the winning entry in all 12 varsity events but the Thunderhawks finished with 571 points to Duluth's 559. Individual events are scored to 16 places, while each team scores one relay.

Joey Zelen swept the sprints, with the Duluth sophomore setting a meet record of 21.81 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and winning the 100 in 48.71, taking both events by exactly one second. Landon West won by a wide margin in 55.54 in the 100 butterfly, then set a meet record of 56.07 in the 100 backstroke. Both swimmers took part in two winning relays as well.

Superior was third with 380 points and got two second-place finishes from Paolo Pagnucci (100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley) and Joe Duzell (50 free, 100 free).

The Tigers rolled to a Heart O'North win over the Hurricanes behind 25 points from Boden Teal on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Gavin Williams added 16 and Bryce Priem 11 for Northwestern, now 11-6 and 9-2 in the HON. Northwestern scored 50 points in the second half after taking a 36-22 halftime lead.

Chris King posted a big double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Rangers on Saturday at Red Lake High School.

Four Rangers scored in double figures led by 29 points from T.J. DuChamp as MIB steadily built on a 34-25 halftime lead.

Superior pulled out of a six-point first-half deficit to get past Eau Claire North on Saturday in Superior.

Eva Peterson had a big day, scoring a game-high 26 for the Spartans, while Kloe Zentkowski and Annabel Manion scored 17 apiece.

Chloe Johnson recorded her sixth triple-double of the season for the Hilltoppers while scoring 25 points on Saturday in International Falls.

Regan Juenemann led all scorers with 28 points. The Hilltoppers had their outside shooting going as usual, making 14 treys as a team, five from Johnson, four by Juenemann and three from Morgan Lucero.

The Lumberjacks gave themselves sufficient cushion in the first half, turning a 12-point halftime lead into a 12-point home win on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Ava Carlson led the Lumberjacks offense with 22 points, while Lelani Fonoti added 16.
