Prep report: Duluth East dominates Conway Classic

Sep. 7—SUPERIOR — Duluth East senior Rowan Bixler was about as dominant at the Conway Classic as one could be Thursday.

Bixler's time of 19 minutes, 3.8 seconds was more than 30 seconds ahead of second-place Adeline Bauer of Ashland to win the race and the Greyhounds placed five runners in the top seven at Pattison Park Golf Course.

Cromwell-Wright's Emaleigh Olesiak finished fifth with a time of 19:53. She and Bauer were the only runners not from Duluth East among the top five finishers.

Carlton/Wrenshall's Brielle Simula finished in 20:10, good enough for seventh overall, and led the Raptors to a second-place finish as a team.

Carlton/Wrenshall's Jack Riley outdueled Northwood/Solon Springs' Isaac Dickenson for the win in the boys' race. Riley finished in 16:27.6, about 11 seconds ahead of Dickenson.

Duluth East's Sam Blascyk finished third with a time of 16:48.9 and he led a pack of four Greyhounds to the finish.

Duluth East placed five runners in the top 10 to take the team win, with Ashland finishing second and Solon Springs finishing third.

The Lumberjacks struck quickly, scoring their first three goals in a six-minute span of the early going to take the advantage at Hermantown on Thursday.

Noah Hansen (seventh minute), Brody Dushkin (ninth) and Santi Anich (13th) quickly put C-E-C up 3-0 in the first half.

The game stabilized from there and Nathan Hill converted a penalty kick to pull a goal back for the host Hawks in the 62nd minute, but Collin Young finished it off late by scoring in the 77th minute.

Walker Marquardt made nine saves in the C-E-C net, while Braden Fulda scored four shots for Hermantown.

The Greyhounds made two early goals from William Smith hold up for a road win at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji on Thursday night.

Smith scored his first on a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 16th minute, then added a second from 15 yards out in the 25th.

East then had to withstand a response goal from the Lumberjacks in the 55th minute and held on for the win.

Ben Senich scored early for the Hunters, but the Thunderhawks responded with a flurry of four unanswered scored in the late first and early second halves.

Dean Kortekaas had the latter two, while Marco Rolle and William Shermoen scored for Rapids in the first half.

Liam Doyle made three saves for Denfeld, while Evan Linnell stopped one shot for Rapids.

The Hawks held host Hibbing/Chisholm to a single shot on goal while blanking the Bluejackets on Thursday night in Hibbing.

Nataleh Rapp opened the scoring for Hermantown in the first half, while Lauren Madill and Taylee Manion added to the lead in the second half.

Cambriia Thomas made one save for the shutout for Hermantown.

Aella White made 12 saves for Hibbing/Chisholm.

Luci Chastey contributed a pair of assists and Cayley Larsen made four saves.

Esko tested its mettle on Thursday night against a school more than eight times its size by enrollment but came up just short.

Britta Koski scored Esko's goal.

The visiting Lumberjacks shook off an early goal from Kaia Christopher to beat the host Lumberjacks on Thursday in Bemidji.

Christopher put Bemidji up a goal in the 19th minute, but Addison Sandman equalized in the 26th minute from an assists by Natalia Hernandez, and Kiley Issendorf opened the second half with the first of two goals.

Rylee Senich made four saves for Cloquet-Carlton.

Abrianna Madill had a goal and four assists as Esko wiped out Hibbing/Chisholm on Wednesday night, Sept. 6, in Esko.

Esko largely spread the wealth around in the rout, as seven players scored. Kaitlyn McConnell and Jordyn Randa scored two goals apiece.

Alyssa Doyle bagged four goals as the Hunters rolled to victory over the agates at Walt Hunting Stadium-Marv Heikkinen Field.

Luci Chastey assisted on two of Doyle's goals and scored the other one herself.

Claire Kaups had a big night of 15 kills and 12 digs as the Hawks swept their neighbors on Thursday night in Proctor, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19.

Gabi Arntson added seven kills and a pair of aces, while Hannah Hyjek (23 assists) and Callie Salgy (15 assists) directed the offense.

Defensively, the Hawks got 21 digs from Abbey McCubbin.

For Proctor, Ella Walker had 16 kills and 12 digs, while Sami Shelton posted 21 assists and nine digs from the setter position.

The Greyhounds cruised to a sweep at home on Thursday night, getting five kills apiece from Ola Okoro and Kristi Jensen. Okoro also directed the offense with 18 assists.

Sarah Greicar had four blocks.
