Prep report: Carlton/Wrenshall girls run up front at Woodbury

Sep. 19—LAKE NEBAGAMON — Paced by a second-place finish from Brielle Simula, the Carlton/Wrenshall girls topped the team standings at the John Woodbury Invitational at Norwood Golf Course.

Adeline Bauer of Ashland crossed the finish line first at 20 minutes, 43.5 seconds for 5 kilometers, with Simula 1.6 seconds behind.

Jenna Hursh of Northwestern, Tayler McMeekin of Superior and Ashlyn Sutherland of Northwestern rounded out the top five.

Hursh and Sutherland's efforts allowed the host Tigers to finish a close second with 63 points to Carlton/Wrenshall's 48.

Solon Springs/Northwood was a clear winner in the boys' race, putting all five of its scoring runners in the top 12. Northwestern, paced by individual winner Morgan Martens, was second.

The Greyhounds grabbed a big win at home in this crosstown matchup, getting their five goals from five players.

Lilly Kuettel was one of the scorers and also contributed two assists. Other goals came from Karyssa Clough, Grace Karakas, Kendall Wittmers-Graves and Emelia Sarvela.

Maggie Winesett made three saves for East (4-3-2).

Goals in quick succession from Max Sundquist and Hudson Snesrud allowed the Lumberjacks to pull away from the Spartans in a Lake Superior Conference match on Tuesday afternoon at Hilltop Park.

After a scoreless first half, Collin Young gave CEC a brief lead, only for his goal to be canceled out by Spencer Kidd for Superior just four minutes later.

However, in the 60th minute, Sundquist gave the hosts a lead again and Snesrud doubled it five minutes later.

Caden Holden made 10 saves for Superior, while Walker Marquardt stopped four shots for CEC.

Briar Mrozik booked a hat trick in 34 minutes as the Hilltoppers rolled on the road.

Denzel Majwega, Benson Peterson, Logan McAuliffe and Andrew Bellehumeur added to the rout for Marshall. Thomas Falgier made two saves.

The Spartans outlasted the Hawks in Superior in a marathon Lake Superior Conference match, 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11.

Tarah Yliniemi had 18 kills and Addy Lisdahl 17 for Superior, while Savannah Hering totaled 25 digs.

The Hawks got 23 kills from both Gabi Arntson and Claire Kaups, with Kaups also recording 22 digs.

The Greyhounds rallied from two sets to none down, dominating sets three (25-11) and four (25-14) and continuing that momentum into the fifth for a 15-8 victory.

Karys Johnson and Tayte Borstad posted 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as East won at home, with Ola Okoro totaling 29 assists.

For Proctor, Ella Walker had 13 kills and 12 digs, while Reagan Rodberg got in on some of Sami Shelton's 19 assists, earning nine kills of her own.

The Hilltoppers prevailed in three close sets, two of them going 26-24 to Marshall.

Addi Stauber racked up 15 kills for Marshall, while Kailee Banta led the defense with 22 digs and Hailey Cummins added 16.

The Raiders got 13 kills and 10 digs from Ava Johnson in a 25-17, 25-23, 25-14 sweep.

Cecilia Vekich set the Raiders with 24 assists, while Addison Williams led the defense with 15 digs and Jocelyn Mikulich added 14.

For Hibbing, Brooke Siekkineu have seven kills, while Jenna Sacco-LaMusga posted 18 digs.

The Tigers got off to a good start, winning the first set, 25-23, but couldn't hold off the Rails the rest of the way, losing the next three 25-16, 25-20, 25-15.

Shelby Hessel piled up 23 digs and added nine kills, while Jillian Kunert's 12 kills were a team high for the Tigers.
