Prep Football Leaders: Monroe County Region leaders after 3 weeks

Seeing a Flat Rock offensive star on top of a Monroe County Region high school football statistical category after three weeks is not surprising.

Perhaps what is surprising is that its running back Brian Booms.

Flat Rock is off to a 3-0 start and has climbed into the state rankings.

The Rams were expected to be solid with quarterback Graham Junge and a host of receivers returning from last season. Junge is off to a great start with 722 yards through the air through three games and he has three receivers with more than 100 yards in receptions.

Booms, however, has made a sudden impact on the Rams with his running game.

Through three weeks he is the co-Region leader with 370 yards on the ground.

Brian Booms of Flat Rock stretches for a touchdown against Airport defenders Colin Nowak and Cooper Nye (14). Flat Rock won 33-21.

Booms is a four-year starter for the Rams, getting his feet wet as a freshman safety. Now he starts both ways, returns kicks, is the long snapper on punts, and calls the defensive signals.

“He never leaves the field,” Flat Rock coach Buck Reaume said. “He’s old school. Throw him into 1950 and he would fit right in.”

Booms set a school record with five touchdowns in Week 2 against Grosse Ile to put him near the top of another category through three games – scoring.

Reaume said the beauty of the Flat Rock offense is there are so many weapons it’s hard for a defense to stop them all.

“We just take whatever is given to us,” Reaume said. “Against Grosse Ile, they took away some of the things we like to do in our passing game and Booms stepped up and had almost 200 rushing yards.”

Through three games, Junge is second in the Region in passing behind Erie Mason’s Vaughn Brown, who has 791 yards through the air. Those two are far ahead of the third quarterback on the list, Cooper Nye of Airport.

Booms shares the rushing lead with Airport’s Jack Mills. Mills leads the county in touchdowns and scoring.

“He’s a load to bring down,” Reaume said of Mills. “He is a heck of a football player.”

Braiden Whitaker of Dundee is the only receiver with more than 300 yards in receptions. He leads a crowded category that includes Korbin Herrera of Erie Mason (299), Tyler Dafoe of Summerfield (259), Landon Vida of Carlson (221) and Kolby Masserant of Whiteford (214).
