Prep Baseball: Victor Valley's Dominic Dominguez named DSL Player of the Year

Dominic Dominguez cranked seven home runs this season to lead Victor Valley’s explosive offense to the Desert Sky League title.

Dominguez’s power display didn’t go unnoticed as he was recently named the league’s Player of the Year.

The Jackrabbits’ catcher collected 34 hits this season, good for a .374 batting average, drove in 33 RBI and scored 23 runs. He also legged out nine doubles and stole two bases.

Six of Dominguez’s teammates received First Team honors, including three pitchers he worked closely with all season  — Michael Jimenez, Aaron Olivares and Aaron Ramirez.

Jimenez, the team’s ace, led the DSL with a 1.13 earned run average, allowing just nine earned runs over 55 ⅔ innings of work. He led Jackrabbits' staff with 59 strikeouts and went 6-1 in 10 appearances on the mound.

Olivares went 6-1 with a 3.18 ERA and 34 strikeouts. Rodriguez had the second-best ERA in the league at 1.48 with 28 strikeouts.

Jimenez and Rodriguez were among six pitchers in the league with sub-2 ERAs.

Adelanto’s Chris Espinoza had the third-best mark in the DSL with a 1.58 ERA. Espinoza is one of four players from Adelanto to earn a spot on the First Team.

Espinoza struck out 66 batters and shared the league lead of eight wins with Barstow’s Gabriel Hernandez, who is one of two Barstow players to receive a nod.

Hernandez ended his junior season with a 1.92 ERA and led the league with 96 strikeouts.
