Quarterfinals, Saturday, Feb. 26

No. 2 SOUDERTON 47, No. 7 PERKIOMEN VALLEY 41

Key player: Casey Harter led the Indians with 14 points.

Highlights: With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of a tie game, freshman Grace McDonough blocked a shot to give the Indians the ball back and end an 8-0 Perkiomen Valley run. Casey Harter then made two free throws to put the Indians back on top. Harter finished with a game-high 14 points, while Teya McConnaha had 12 and Erin Bohmueller added eight points. Souderton will host No. 11 Spring-Ford in Wednesday’s semifinal game.

No. 4 PENNSBURY 50, No. 5 ABINGTON 48

Key player: Sophomore Layla Matthias grabbed a rebound with 17 seconds to go and passed to Ava Sciolla, who hit two free throws to seal the win.

Highlights: It was fitting that the back-and-forth game which featured multiple lead changes wasn’t decided until the final seconds of play in the District One Class 6A quarterfinal. With 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Layla Matthias came up with a critical rebound and immediately dished it to Ava Sciolla, who sank a pair of free throws after being fouled. Sofia Vitucci led the offense for the Falcons with 20 points, while Nevaeh Dash scored 13 and Nicole Pompili netted nine points. Cire Worley paced the Ghosts with 16 points while Abril Bowser had nine. Pennsbury will now have to face top-seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh in Wednesday’ semifinal. Plymouth Whitemarsh defeated Pennsbury in the SOL Tournament title game with the Falcons’ sitting their starters. The Ghosts, who clinched a spot in the state tournament, will host Haverford for a playback game on Wednesday.

Highlights: Ava Sciolla scored seven of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter as the Falcons rebounded from a five-point halftime deficit to secure the win against Souderton in the third-place game. Sofia Vitucci added 12 points for the Falcons, while Casey Harter led the Indians with 12 points.

5th place game: No. 5 ABINGTON 54, No. 7 PERKIOMEN VALLEY 45

Highlights: The Ghosts started off slowly, but picked up the pace in the second half of the fifth-place game. Jaida Helm led all players with 17 points and 14 rebounds while holding Perk Valley’s high-scoring threat Quinn Boettinger to seven points. Cire Worley had 16 points while sophomore Piper McGinely scored all nine of her points in the second half to help the Ghosts; secure the win.

11th place game: No. 10 NESHAMINY 36, No. 13 UPPER DUBLIN 30

Key players: EmmyFaith Wood and Holly Gohl had nine points apiece for the Golden Bears.

Highlights: The Golden Bears kept pace with Marple Newtown for three quarters, but a sluggish second quarter saw Upper Moreland facing a 32-18 deficit by halftime in the playback game. EmmyFaith Wood and Holly Gohl both had nine points for the Golden Bears, while Kiera Coyle scored eight. The Golden Bears finished a successful season with a 17-7 record (13-3 SOL) and the SOL Freedom Division title.

Key player: Jeremy Rodriguez led the Owls with 18 points; Allen Myers had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Highlights: Norristown used balanced scoring and good defense to end Bensalem's hopes of a district title Friday night. The No. 12 Eagles never trailed in the 50-46 win and fought back from three ties to beat No. 44 Bensalem. It was the second time this season that Bensalem lost to Norristown, the first being on Jan. 31. The Eagles will play top-seeded Methacton in Tuesday's semifinals. The Owls, who already secured a spot in the PIAA tournament, will play Garnet Valley in the playback round Tuesday at Bensalem.

No. 2 LOWER MERION 60, No. 23 ABINGTON 28

Key player: Derrius Lucas led the Ghosts with 11 points.

Highlights: After knocking off the No. 7 and No. 10 teams in the first two rounds, Abington’s string of upsets came to an end against No. 2 Lower Merion in the quarterfinals. While the Ghosts’ hopes of a District One championship came to an end, they secured a spot in the PIAA state tournament. Abington will play No. 22 Plymouth Whitemarsh in Tuesday’s playback game to establish seeding for the state championship.

Playbacks, Friday, Feb. 25

No. 7 WEST CHESTER EAST 56, No. 15 COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 51

Key player: Adam Mahtat scored 17 points for the Indians.

Highlights: The Indians’ strong first half had them holding a 5-point lead at halftime in the Class 6A playback game. Adam Mahtat scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the second quarter, but the Indians couldn’t overcome a strong fourth quarter from seventh-seeded WC East. Jack Blum had 14 points and Bernie Parent put up 13 in the close contest. The loss ends an excellent season by the Indians, who finished with a 17-9 record.

Key player: Tomir Johnson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime in the Pioneers’ semifinal win.

Highlights: With seven seconds remaining in overtime and his team down by three points, Tomir Johnson sprinted the length of the court and sank a 3-pointer as time expired to send the game into double overtime. In the second overtime, Johnson came up with a clutch steal, leading to Vaughan Martin’s two points at the free throw line to seal the win. Prior to that play, Hoyt Bultje had hit a pair of free throws to give the Pioneers the lead. Bultje, who had just two points in the first half, finished with 18 points. Nathan Lapp paced the Pioneers’ offense with 21 points, while Johnson finished with 12 points. The Pioneers, who clinched a state tournament berth, will play top-seeded Executive Education in Saturday’s championship game.

Highlights: Twelve players put points on the board as the Vikings romped to a 63-21 win over Boys Latin to secure a spot in the PIAA state playoffs. Jalil Bethea led the way with 11 points, while Carey Maxey netted nine and Mike Knouse scored seven points.

Key player: Kendall Bennett posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Patriots.

Highlights: The Patriots kept it close until the end, when top-seeded Westtown outscored Germantown Academy 17-9 to secure the PAISAA semifinal win. Junior Kendall Bennett tallied 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Patriots, while Jess Aponik scored 14 points and Sam Wade tallied eight points and six assists. Westtown senior Kaylene Smikle led all scorers with 30 points. While the loss ends their highly successful season, the youthful Patriots will return all starters next season.

Key player: Freshman Priyanka Ponnam had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the Cougars’ win.

Highlights: Priyanka Ponnam posted a double-double in George School’s semifinal win over Mercersburg on Thursday. Sophia Martinez led all scores with 20 points, while Paiyton Penn added 17 points and six rebounds. The Cougars will host Hill School on Saturday in the Commonwealth Cup championship.
