Postgame recap: Jacksonville Jaguars rally past Colts for Week 1 win

The 2023 NFL regular season is officially here for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags kick off their second year under head coach Doug Pederson with a 1 p.m. Sunday trip to the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts in Lucas Oil Stadium.

The game will be a matchup of highly-drafted young quarterbacks. Trevor Lawrence is in his third year with the Jaguars, and enters with high expectations after leading the Jags to the AFC divisional playoffs last year with a late-season surge and a thrilling comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers.

He takes on rookie Anthony Richardson, a University of Florida standout who has trained in the Jacksonville area.

Former Florida Gator Anthony Richardson's debut with Colts a mixed bag in loss to Jaguars

For most of the afternoon, the Colts' game-planners seemed intent on not asking too much of quarterback Anthony Richardson in his NFL debut. When the Colts finally had no other choice, they got some of the promise he offers, and a glimpse of the expected growing pains. - Ken Willis

Breaking the Colts: Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence continues his success vs. Indy

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had his only divisional victory as a rookie quarterback in 2021 against the Indianapolis Colts — a stellar performance in the final week of an otherwise dismal 3-14 season in which he reassured everyone that he was most assuredly not a bust. The Colts are the only AFC South team that the Jags have beaten three times with Lawrence under center in the past three seasons. - Garry Smits

Jaguars overcome miscues to defeat Colts 31-21 in Week 1. Here are our takeaways.

Jacksonville entered the game having lost nine out of their last 10 games in Indianapolis. Now, they've reset the streak, putting the onus back on the Colts' side of the coin. - Demetrius Harvey

FINAL: Jaguars 31, Colts 20

Anthony Richardson was forced from the game on the final series, a further negative for the Colts. That meant a brief entry for Gardner Minshew, but Darious Williams and Foye Oluokun recorded big pass breakups. The Jags escape.

Two-minute warning: Jaguars lead Colts 31-20

Anthony Richardson and Indianapolis are on the march, but they're running out of time.

Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne takes it to the end zone

It's been a wild ride but the Jaguars are closing in on victory. Travis Etienne breaks a couple of tackles and zooms to the end zone as the Jags punish that Colts miscue.

Interception! Tyson Campbell picks off Anthony Richardson

That might almost do it. Tyson Campbell makes the leaping pick and the Jaguars take off in Indy territory. Another TD here could wrap it up for the Jaguars.

Touchdown Jaguars: Tank time as Tank Bigsby restores Jacksonville lead

The Jamal Agnew punt return: big. Trevor Lawrence made it pay off with an excellent drive, including a well-timed QB draw and a crucial fourth-down conversion to Zay Jones. Then, Tank Bigsby -- who had a pretty tough debut up to this point, pushed the pile with a run to the 1, and carried the ball into the end zone on the next play. The Jags are back in front.

Jaguars 24, Colts 21, 5:14 2nd.

Jaguars needed that: Long punt return by Jamal Agnew

The Colts have tried to punt out of bounds and away from the elusive Jamal Agnew, but it didn't work that time. The Jaguars' return specialist fielded the bounding ball at his own 5 and carried it across midfield to the Indianapolis 46. The Jags are in business with fewer than 11 minutes to go.

Jaguars stuffed again on fourth down

It's been short-yardage misery for both teams: Indianapolis is 0 for 3 on fourth down, and Jacksonville is now 0 for 2. Facing third and 2 at the Indianapolis 49, the Jaguars called for consecutive Trevor Lawrence sneaks, and came up short both times. It's Colts football.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: Colts 21, Jaguars 17

That multiple fumble is the difference right now. The Jaguars, enduring a rough day on the offensive front, have 15 minutes left to change this ballgame.

Touchdown Colts: Trevor Lawrence is strip-sacked, Tank Bigsby fumbles again, DeForest Buckner takes it back to end zone

Another breakdown for the Jaguars' offensive line, and more. One play after a Walker Little hold wiped out a long catch to Calvin Ridley, Trevor Lawrence got strip-sacked down the middle by DeForest Buckner. Then, Tank Bigsby picked up the loose ball but didn't protect it and got stripped again by Zaire Franklin, and Buckner took it back to the house. It holds up after review. An all-around bad play for the Jags.

Colts 21, Jaguars 17, 2:27 3rd.

And… Colts' fourth-down attempt fails near midfield

Something that's gone well for the Jags today: Short-yardage defense. Indianapolis goes for another fourth-and-1 play and it had no chance, with Foye Oluokun and Tyson Campbell snuffing it out and even forcing a fumble. Jacksonville takes over on downs at the 46.

Jaguars' fourth-down attempt fails at midfield

The Jaguars went for fourth and 1 at midfield… and it didn't work. Trevor Lawrence threw to Evan Engram, but E.J. Speed fought off the block attempt from rookie Brenton Strange and downed Engram in the backfield. Indy takes over at the 49.

Return of Sacksonville? Back-to-back Josh Allen sacks

Josh Allen forces Anthony Richardson out of bounds for no gain and then a loss of 1 on consecutive plays. Counting his sack in the first quarter, he's now up to a career-high three.

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus finishes off drive with Jacksonville kick

The Jags are back in front. Travis Etienne got stuffed on third down, but Brandon McManus delivered a 45-yard field goal to restore the Jaguars' edge. Run blocking has been a major issue for the Jaguars in this game, and now they're also without Brandon Scherff, carted off in the third quarter with what looked like a leg injury.

Jaguars 17, Colts 14, 8:31 3rd.

Review bails out potential interception

That was a close one for Trevor Lawrence. His short pass went straight to Colts defensive back Julian Blackmon, who juggled the ball before bringing it under control. Replays showed that Blackmon trapped the ball against the ground, though, and officials ruled the play incomplete.

Touchdown Colts: Anthony Richardson throws first TD pass, ties score

It's Anthony Richardson time, with a play that he will remember -- but one that Jaguars fans will want to forget. On second and 28, Richardson throws to Michael Pittman Jr. in the flat, and the receiver took the screen 39 yards for the score.

Colts 14, Jaguars 14, 11:25 3rd.

Second half kicks off: Jaguars lead 14-7 in Indy

Jacksonville takes possession to begin the third quarter. Will the offensive line show improvements after the break?

HALFTIME: Jaguars 14, Colts 7

That's halftime. A solid first half for Calvin Ridley… a less-than-solid one for the Jacksonville offensive line. But they're two quarters away from a Week 1 win.

Fumble: Andre Cisco and Foye Oluokun jar football free, Angelo Blackson recovers for Jags

That's a big play on D. Two plays ago, Andre Cisco was penalized for a helmet-to-helmet hit, but he teamed up with linebacker Foye Oluokun to force a fumble. Defensive tackle Angelo Blackson, who was following the play, cleaned up the loose ball on the Jacksonville 31.

Touchdown Jaguars: Spectacular diving catch by Zay Jones from Trevor Lawrence pass

Now that's one of the best TD catches in a long, long time for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence throws to the back corner of the end zone, where Zay Jones reached out with his right hand and came down with his left arm in bounds, somehow maintaining possession without landing on the white paint.

Jaguars 14, Colts 7, 4:56 2nd.

Gotsis got it: Deflection forces another turnover on downs

The Colts have gone for it twice on fourth down in the second quarter, and they've failed twice. This time, Adam Gotsis whacked the pass from Anthony Richardson down to the ground on fourth and 4, and the Jaguars will take over close to midfield.

Stuffed: Jaguars deny Indianapolis in red zone

The Jaguars' defense made sure that turnover didn't lead to points. The Colts rushed to the line to go for a fourth-and-1 play at Jacksonville's 16, but the Jags made the stop for the turnover on downs.

Interception: Trevor Lawrence is picked off after deflection

The Jaguars' drive couldn't escape the turnover bug. Trevor Lawrence passed to the right flat, where Tank Bigsby couldn't bring it in and instead tipped it into the hands of the Colts' Tony Brown. Brown returned the pick to the Jacksonville 25, where the Jags brought him down to save the touchdown. But Indy is again in prime field position.

Fumble: Calvin Ridley loses football, but Jaguars retain possession after review

Calvin Ridley has his first Jaguars touchdown, and he almost followed with his first Jaguars fumble. Catching a pass from Trevor Lawrence that's jammed through the tight window, Ridley fumbled just across midfield and E.J. Speed recovered for the Colts. But Speed was on the ground out of bounds when he touched the ball, making the play dead. The Jags' drive remains alive for now.

Touchdown Colts: Anthony Richardson scores his first NFL TD, ties Jaguars

That ties it up. Anthony Richardson looked like a seasoned veteran on that drive, highlighted by a strike to Josh Downs to get into the red zone. Richardson finished it off with a 2-yard quarterback draw.

Colts 7, Jaguars 7, 14:57 2nd.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Jaguars 7, Colts 0

That's the end of the first quarter, but Anthony Richardson has the Indianapolis offense on the move. The Colts have marched inside the Jacksonville 5.

Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence finds Calvin Ridley from 10 yards

There's the first TD of the season for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence led a nice drive up the field, including key completions to Evan Engram and Calvin Ridley, before scrambling away from pressure and finding Ridley in the back of the end zone. The Jags are in front to start the season.

Jaguars 7, Colts 0, 5:18 1st.

He then was traded during his suspension after a four-year stay with the Atlanta Falcons to the Jacksonville Jaguars where he will reignite his career.
