‘Go play our game, take care of business’: Jimbo Fisher speaks before 11th practice of fall camp
As the 2023 college football season continues to draw near, Aggie fans continue to get a glimpse into how the Maroon and White are preparing, both mentally and physically, for a pivotal fall campaign.
On Monday afternoon, Texas A&M football Head Coach Jimbo Fisher, as well as players Trey Zuhn III and Demani Richardson, took to the podium to speak with the media before the team’s 11th fall camp practice. There was no shortage of topics that Fisher covered in his roughly 20-minute stint at the podium, including his assessment of the team’s depth as well as takeaways from Saturday’s scrimmage.
On the latter, he also provided his perspective on the unfortunate news that tight end Donovan Green would miss the entire 2023 season after tearing his ACL during said scrimmage. While it’s an undeniable blow to the team’s depth and an even more significant hit for a hardworking young man like Green, Fisher echoed the utmost confidence that the sophomore would return stronger than ever next year.
Zuhn spoke at length about his injury recovery process and his perspective as an Aggie legacy, while Richardson shed light on how the secondary fared during Saturday’s scrimmage.
Below is Jimbo Fisher’s full press conference video ahead of Monday’s fall practice, as well as notable highlights from his time at the podium.
Building a winning culture starts with brewing confidence
“Your chemistry grows as you gain confidence in what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. You have to take it to a game and a season. That chemistry and culture continue to grow.”
Jimbo believes the front seven will decide who comes out on top in the SEC
“There are 12 regular-season games, and every team in this league has great defensive people. That’s what separates this league.”
Texas A&M's versatile RB room should help for the marathon of the season
“You like to have a bunch of them because nicks and knacks and being banged up kind of goes with the territory.”
Given recent developments, Jimbo is thankful for the depth at the TE position
“I’ve been very pleased with that. We held Max (Wright) out of the scrimmage because he had a toe, but he’ll be ready to go.”
Jimbo is confident that Donovan Green will come back stronger than ever from his ACL injury
“Understand that it can be very disheartening, but he’s a young guy that can come back from that. There are a huge number of guys that have done it, and you have to keep that in their head.”
Jimbo loved the physicality in Saturday's scrimmage
“I want sides to make plays. I don’t want sides making plays because the other one screws up. You have to be able to take advantage of the situations… You’re looking for overall execution. Physicality was good. You always want to see more consistency. Upfront on both sides of the ball, we had good physicality.”
Jimbo highlighted how the QBs were accurate and took care of the ball in scrimmage
“I thought we were physical. For the most part, we took care of the ball pretty well. As a defense, you want to create takeaways… For the quarterbacks, decision-making was pretty good, as was the accuracy.”
Jimbo emphasized the hustle and physicality of the young defensive backs
“They’re natural. They hustle, they listen, they learn. They like contact and tackle well in coverage.”
DJ Hicks...enough said!
“DJ Hicks, man, you know we recruited the right guys.”
Never question Trey Zuhn's toughness
“Trey (Zuhn) is a very, very intelligent guy. Trey can play across the board if he had to. He had a shoulder and knee that were bothering him like crazy, and he never missed a practice… He’s a tough son of a gun.”
Being ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll? So what, it's time to back it up
“Go play our game, take care of business, and you’ll move up the poll.”
The O-line was another group whose development caught Jimbo's attention
“Those guys, we have to go play in games like that, but I’ve been pleased with their development.”
