Cassidy Swain and Story Buchanan win initial Athlete of the Week polls for winter season

Students from General McLane and Girard were the winners for the Erie Times-News’ initial Female Athlete of the Week and Male Athlete of the Week polls for District 10’s winter sports season.

McLane swimmer Cassidy Swain was the female victor based on her performance during the Cathedral Prep Invitational. She was an individual and relay gold medalist during the meet at the Ramblers’ David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center.

Swain received 79 votes. That was 31 more than those cast for Harbor Creek basketball player Brooke Przybylski.

Story Buchanan topped the male ballot. The Girard wrestler began his senior season with the YellowJackets as the 160-pound champion for season-opening Hickory Invitational at Hermitage.

Buchanan’s 84 votes topped the 64 for Iroquois basketball player Cajohn Howard and 63 for North East wrestler Bryson Galloway.

Here's a look at this week's polls:

How it works

Each week during the winter high school sports seasons, Erie Times-News staff members will select nominees for the Female Athlete of the Week and the Male Athlete of the Week.

The two polls will be posted on GoErie.com/sports each Monday at 5 p.m., and voting will continue through Wednesday at 5 p.m. The polls, based on the previous week's performances, are sponsored by Seaway Window and AHN.

We invite readers to support their favorite athlete by sharing the polls and spreading the word on social media.

The two winners will be featured in this story and in the Erie County Top Performers story.

Readers may nominate an athlete for the polls by sending an email to sports@timesnews.com with "Athlete of the Week nominee" in the subject line. Include the athlete's school, sport, year in school and a breakdown of their achievements from the previous week.

We don't promise all nominees will be used, but we will consider all nominations.
