Phil Steele names Wisconsin among surprise teams for 2022 season

On Tuesday, Sam Marsdale of 247Sports published a list of 12 teams capable of surprising people during the 2022 college football season.

The Wisconsin Badgers, who are coming off a 9-4 campaign that ended in a Las Vegas Bowl appearance, came in at No. 11 on Marsdale’s list.

UW entered last season ranked No. 15 in the country but quickly fell to 1-3 and had to rattle off seven straight victories to have a shot at the Big Ten West title, which they ultimately lost to Minnesota.

Coach Chryst has since revamped his coaching staff and made several key additions through the transfer portal, positioning Wisconsin for another run at the Big Ten West.

The Badgers’ defense is expected to be one of the top units in college football, but they’ll need more production from third-year starting quarterback Graham Mertz to get over the hump.
