Petoskey boys add BNC win, EJ wins at WMU; Harbor girls top Sault in Cadillac

ALPENA — Some games feel like must win situations.

Friday night was kind of one of those times for the Petoskey boys’ basketball team.

Having dropped five of their last six heading in and with a trip to Alpena on deck, that bus ride home – already long – would have been pretty miserable for the Northmen if they brought back another loss.

Would have been.

Behind a big fourth quarter, Petoskey was able to pull away from Alpena in their Big North Conference meeting for a 57-40 victory, their second within BNC play.

That 18-point fourth came with 10 points alone from senior guard Jimmy Marshall.

“Jimmy's shot selection continues to become more consistent,” Petoskey coach Matt Tamm said. “He continues to take higher percentage shots. On the defensive end, he did a good job of helping in the middle. Love the fact that he is following his shot, sealing better on box outs and is attacking the basket.”

Petoskey's Jimmy Marshall had another standout performance for the Northmen, this time with 10 points in the fourth quarter alone to help seal a victory on the road over Alpena Friday.

Marshall finished the game with 23 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

The Northmen, who moved to 6-6 overall and 2-3 within the Big North, also got a solid 11 points out of Brady Odenbach and 12 points from Korbin Sulitis.

“Brady continues to step up his game at both ends of the court,” added Tamm. “He hit some big shots and continues to create easier scoring opportunities for his teammates. Korbin is very athletic and made numerous big plays for us tonight. He is improving on his free throws and we are finding new ways to tap into his athleticism.”

Tamm also mentioned Brandon Klingelsmith – who finished with seven points – and Ely Pethers, both with solid performances.

Petoskey won’t return to the court again until the Cadillac Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 27 where they meet Grand Rapids Union.
