Pete Papahronis named the Girls Coach of Year at OKC Metro High School Sports Awards
Edmond North girls basketball coach Pete Papahronis was named the Girls Team Coach of the Year during the 2023 OKC Metro High School Sports Awards, presented by BancFirst. The show was held June 8 at the OKC Convention Center. Featured speaker was Oklahoma City native and former Heisman trophy winner Sam Bradford.
Other finalists for the award were Piedmont soccer coach Brad Brucker and Edmond Memorial volleyball coach Natalie Murray. Brucker guided the Wildcats to their first state title. Murray led the Bulldogs to their first state title since 2016.
But what Papahronis did on the court this year stood above the rest. Papahronis guided Edmond North to its first girls basketball state championship last season in Class 6A, and the Huskies lost just one game. This season, he led Edmond North to a 29-0 record as it claimed back-to-back titles. Papahronis has now become the first coach in the two highest classes of Oklahoma high school hoops to win back-to-back titles in both boys and girls basketball. He won back-to-back titles with the Guthrie boys in 2008-2009.
In all, more than 250 student athletes were honored during the show, which celebrates athletes from the Oklahoma City area. Thirty-two winners were honored as the best in their individual sports, as well as nine premier awards, s, including Boys Athlete of the Year, Girls Athlete of the Year, Boys Team of the Year, Girls Team of the Year, Boys Coach Team of the Year, Girls Coach Team of the Year, the Courage Award, and the School Spirit Award.
The OKC Metro High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
