'It's personal': Here's how Crest football scored a measure of revenge over rival Burns

Crest's A.J. Adams sheds the tackle attempt of Burns' Graham Warlick during the first half of their game in Lawndale on Aug. 25, 2023.

LAWNDALE — A power outage in the waning moments of Crest’s 35-12 loss to rival Burns last fall added salt to an already gaping wound. A year later, the bitter taste of defeat still didn’t sit well with the Chargers, particularly coach Jim Sosebee.

“It killed me all year; I’ve probably watched this tape more than any of them,” he said. “It was embarrassing.”

With an opportunity to score a measure of revenge Friday night, Crest didn’t let it go to waste.

The Chargers moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 49-29 victory at Burns, ending the Bulldogs’ 13-game home win streak.

“It was personal,” said Crest quarterback Ny’Tavious Huskey. “I was 0-2 against Burns. It was really personal.”

Huskey didn’t wait long to start the fireworks, with the first pass of the night going for a 79-yard touchdown to Malachi Addison. He’d add three more TD passes to his tally, two to UNC football recruit Javarius Green and another to A.J. Adams.

Though the Chargers’ aerial attack was clicking on all cylinders, Aiden Carson showed they can run the football as well. The junior running back’s two long touchdown runs helped stake Crest to a 23-13 halftime advantage.

“I just saw everyone was more spread to the outside, the middle was open,” he said of his two touchdown runs. “Just had to hit it. I (basically saw the end zone), that’s what I was going for.”

Crest’s Derek Mitchell also rushed for a touchdown.

Burns (1-1) kept it close early on, but could not keep pace in the second half. Ben Mauney threw touchdown passes to Kamari Surratt and Graham Warlick, in addition to rushing for a TD in a losing effort. Jeremiah Norris also ran for a TD.

Crest travels to Shelby next week, while Burns hosts Kings Mountain.
