Penn State's Nick Singleton, 3 teammates make Sporting News All-American Team

Aug. 22—Former Gov. Mifflin star Nick Singleton and three Penn State football teammates were named Tuesday to the The Sporting News Preseason All-American Team.

Offensive tackle Olu Fashanu and cornerback Kalen King were selected to the first team one day after they made The Associated Press Preseason All-American first team.

Singleton and defensive end Chop Robinson were chosen to The Sporting News second team, giving the Nittany Lions four selections and tying them with Georgia for the second most. Ohio State led all schools with five picks, four on the first team.

The 6-6, 319-pound Fashanu, a junior, burst onto the scene last season in his first season as a starter by allowing no sacks at left tackle. The 5-11, 191-pound King, a junior, led the Big Ten and finished third in the country with 21 passes defended, 18 breakups and three interceptions.

The 6-0, 224-pound Singleton led Penn State in rushing last season with 1,061 yards, becoming just the third freshman in school history to reach 1,000. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry and ran for a Penn State freshman-record 12 touchdowns.

The 6-3, 250-pound Robinson, a junior, ranked among the Big Ten leaders with 10 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks as a backup last season.

Ohio State placed wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau and linebacker Tommy Eichenberg on the first team and guard Donovan Jackson on the second team.

The Big Ten led with 15 selections. Michigan running back Blake Corum made the first team, along with Illinois defensive lineman Jer'Zhan Newton and Iowa punter Tory Taylor. The second team included Michigan guard Zak Zinter, Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean and Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin.
