Penn State's Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs are selected to Butkus Award watch list

Aug. 10—Three Penn State football players were named Thursday to watch lists for two college football awards.

Sophomore Abdul Carter and junior Curtis Jacobs were selected to the watch list for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation's outstanding linebacker.

Junior cornerback Kalen King was named to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive back.

With Carter and Jacobs, Penn State is one of only seven schools that have teammates on the Butkus watch list. The others are Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

The 6-3, 250-pound Carter earlier was named to the watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Lott IMPACT Trophy.

He was voted a Freshman All-American by several organizations last season after he made 56 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He was selected to the All-Big Ten second team by the media and to the third team by the coaches.

The 6-1, 238-pound Jacobs received All-Big Ten honorable mention last season after he had 52 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, two pass breakups and an interception he returned for a touchdown.

The 5-11, 191-pound King earlier was named to the watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Lott IMPACT Trophy.

He was voted to the Walter Camp Foundation All-America second team and to the All-Big Ten third team last season after he finished first in the conference and third nationally in passes defended (21) and pass breakups (18).
