Penn State trending in good direction with one of 247Sports’ most notable decommitments

The early signing period will be here before you know it and Penn State is hoping to take advantage of a late decommitment from an ACC school to add to its Class of 2023 haul. And according to 247Sports, it could come down to Penn State and Virginia Tech for this four-star recruit.

Linebacker Kaveion Keys, from Richmond, Virginia, decommitted from North Carolina on December 8, just weeks before the start of the early signing period (which officially begins on Dec. 21 and closes on Dec. 23). His commitment was included in a list of some of the most notable decommitments before the start of the early signing period by 247Sports.  Almost as soon as Keys opened up his recruiting process, Penn State became the leading pick from recruiting analysts.

But James Franklin and his staff may have to hold off Virginia Tech for the commitment. The Hokies, with former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry as head coach, would love to keep one of Virginia’s top defensive players close to home, and winning a recruiting battle with Penn State would be a solid victory for Pry and his staff in Blacksburg.

It may be fair to keep North Carolina on the radar as well, although Keys’ decision to recommit from UNC coming off an appearance in the ACC championship game suggests the Tar Heels are being left behind for another program. And Penn State appears to be in the mix as the favorite according to the recruiting analysts.
