Patrick Mahomes makes even more history in Chiefs win over Browns

The “Greatest Show on Turf” comparisons might not be that far off for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Like those Rams teams, we can basically pencil in this year’s Chiefs for certain benchmarks. In every game this season they’ve had at least 340 yards and 27 points. And in the Chiefs’ last eight games, Patrick Mahomes has had 300 yards. And with that, he tied another record.

In the Chiefs’ 37-21 win over the Browns, Mahomes tied Andrew Luck’s NFL record by throwing for 300 yards for the eighth straight game within a single season. Mahomes can break the record next week at home against Arizona.

Given that the Chiefs offense looks practically unstoppable, another 300-yard game seems like a good bet.

Patrick Mahomes shines again

Home or road, it doesn’t matter much for Mahomes. He had 200 yards well before halftime at the Browns on Sunday. He looked great yet again, adding to a resume that has him in the early lead of the NFL MVP race.

Mahomes completed 23-of-32 passes for 375 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The interception is rare for him, but it came on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half.

Mahomes had a lot of help. Kareem Hunt had a great catch-and-run on a wonderfully designed screen pass for a 50-yard touchdown. On a third-and-19, Spencer Ware had a great open-field run to pick up 25 yards after a short pass.

Mahomes still made his typical Mahomes plays. His second touchdown to Travis Kelce was perfectly placed, allowing Kelce to catch it high over the defender in the end zone.

Mahomes was on point most of the day, which has been the story of his season. The only time he failed to reach 300 yards this season was in the opener against the Chargers, when he threw for 256 yards. He threw for four touchdowns and no interceptions that day. He’s on pace for the third 50-touchdown season in NFL history.

Sunday was a reminder that the Browns could have drafted Mahomes last season and passed (fired Browns coach Hue Jackson hasn’t forgotten).

Chiefs offense has another big day

While Mahomes continued to push his MVP lead, the rest of the Chiefs were a big help. That has also come to be expected. Kareem Hunt is putting together another fantastic season and had three touchdowns Sunday, the offensive line is playing well, and targets Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins seem to trade off having big weeks. There’s a reason this offense is the NFL’s best.

The defense is still a work in progress, but it might not matter. The Browns trailed 37-21 in the final five minutes when Steven Nelson picked off Baker Mayfield to end any small comeback hopes they had. That’s all the Chiefs need: timely big plays by the defense.

The Chiefs improved to 8-1 with the win. By now we know what to expect from the Chiefs offense every week. Other teams will just have to outscore them to win. Good luck.
