Packers to face Saints QB Jameis Winston in season opener

The Green Bay Packers now know which starting quarterback they’ll face in the season opener in New Orleans.

The Saints have named Jameis Winston as the starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Packers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Winston, who re-signed with the Saints on a one-year deal, beat out former Packers quarterback Taysom Hill for the right to replace future Hall of Famer Drew Brees as the new starter in New Orleans. Brees retired this offseason.

Winston was terrific this preseason. He completed 9-of-10 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns during the Saints’ preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday.

The Packers have only faced Winston once in the regular season. In 2017, Winston threw two touchdown passes and had a passer rating of 112.8 during a 26-20 overtime loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field.

Winston played in only four regular-season games last year. During his last season as a starter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, he threw 33 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions.

The Packers beat Brees and the Saints in New Orleans last season.
