OU unveils Kyler Murray statue in Friday ceremony ahead of Sooners' spring football game

There are a slew of poses OU could have used to immortalize Kyler Murray at Heisman Park.

A perfect slide after picking up a first down.

A touchdown celebration.

Or, simply, just a quarterback throwing the ball.

The Sooners went with the latter.

OU unveiled the statue of the school's seventh Heisman Trophy winner on Friday night at the Omni Hotel in Oklahoma City. It will go on public display Saturday morning outside Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman before the Sooners' spring game.

Murray's statue will adorn Heisman Park along with those depicting Baker Mayfield, Sam Bradford, Jason White, Billy Sims, Steve Owens and Billy Vessels.

It is the second consecutive year that the Sooners have unveiled a statue of a Heisman winner, which is fitting since Murray followed Mayfield as back-to-back Heisman winners from OU in 2017-18. Mayfield was among the many former Sooners on hand Friday night to celebrate with Murray.

It's been five years since Murray's lone season as the Sooners' starting quarterback, but it's been enough time to appreciate what he accomplished and wonder what might have been had he played longer in the crimson and cream.

The numbers were staggering, as if Murray had been lifted straight out of a video-game created character.

Murray went 260-for-377 passing for 4,361 yards with 42 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in 14 games. He ran for another 1,001 yards and 12 touchdowns on 140 carries.

He led the Sooners to the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff, where he did everything he could to keep the Sooners in the mix with Alabama in the semifinal.

“Only thing I would change is being able to play here one more year,” Murray said in a video posted by the team Friday on Twitter.

Murray declared for the NFL Draft after the 2018 season and was selected No. 1 overall by the Arizona Cardinals.

In 57 games and four seasons in the NFL, Murray has completed 66.8% of his passes for 13,848 yards with 84 passing touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He's rushed for 2,204 yards and 23 touchdowns on 381 carries (5.8 yards per carry).

The Murray statue ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the east side of the stadium. Fans will be able to take photos next to the statue until 2 p.m. The spring football game will start at 2:30 p.m.
