An OT winner, a 5-for-5 day and more: Vote for the High School Athlete of the Week

Norwich Free Academy’s Hailey Smith has been voted The Bulletin “Athlete of the Week” for the fifth week of the spring season. The Wildcats senior pitcher lifted NFA to impressive wins over Waterford and Glastonbury. Smith allowed just two earned runs while striking out six in a 7-2 victory against Waterford.

Smith allowed just one run with four strikeouts in NFA’s 2-1 win over Glastonbury.

Last week saw plenty of standout performances in softball, boys volleyball, boys golf and girls lacrosse across Eastern Connecticut. While there's no shortage of talent, we went and found the best of the best.

Here are the nominees:

Sienna Caron, Griswold/Norwich Tech

Caron, a junior, collected six goals and one assist in leading the Wolverines to a 14-8 girls lacrosse victory over Woodstock Academy. She also poured in six goals with five assists in a 20-6 win over New London/St. Bernard.

Caron added three goals and one assist in the Wolverines’ 10-7 loss to Bacon Academy/East Hampton.

Molly Crabtree, Killingly

Crabtree, a senior, scored five goals, including the game-winning goal with 33 seconds remaining in double-overtime, to lift Killingly to a 10-9 girls lacrosse victory over Montville.

Kylie Damble, Ellis Tech

Damble, a senior, went 5-for-5 with a double, triple and four RBIs to power the Golden Eagles to a 22-6 softball victory over Cheney Tech. She also had four hits and three RBIs in Ellis Tech’s 9-4 win over Windham Tech.

Alec Ferland, Norwich Free Academy

Ferland, a junior, dished out 28 assists and collected seven digs to help the Wildcats boys volleyball team sweep Wethersfield, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-18, and extend their winning streak to nine games.

Autumn Hanks, Norwich Tech

Hanks, a junior pitcher, won four games, leading the Warriors to softball victories over Windham Tech, Grasso Tech, and Cheney Tech.

Hanks tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in Norwich Tech’s 18-2 (5) win over Grasso Tech. She allowed just one hit in a 20–4 mercy-rule win over Cheney Tech. She completed her 4-0 week with a winning relief stint as Norwich Tech held off Windham Tech, 25-20.

At the plate, Hanks went 3-for-4 with a double against Cheney Tech. She had two hits, including a double and a triple, and five RBIs in a win against Windham Tech. She also had two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs in a win over Windham Tech earlier in the week.

Nick Wigfield, Norwich Free Academy

Wigfield, a junior, earned medalist honors with a score of 1-under par 34 to lead the Wildcats to a 4-3 boys golf win against Killingly at Connecticut National Golf Club. The match was decided by the team score as NFA edged Killingly, 156-160.
