Only in Anaheim: Angels hit 7 home runs, manage to lose 8-7

The bats of the moribund Los Angeles Angels woke up in a big way on Thursday, jumping the Oakland Athletics' pitching for a whopping seven home runs.

It was tied for the most home runs any team in MLB has hit in a game this season. Two of the long balls came from Shohei Ohtani, continuing a back-to-back MVP campaign for the Japanese phenom.

The Angels lost 8-7.

Yes, despite hitting seven home runs, the Angels found a way to lose, because every single homer they hit was a solo homer. Ohtani, Kurt Suzuki, Taylor Ward, Jo Adell, Jared Walsh and Mickey Moniak all went deep, just with no one on base.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, the Angels' seven solo homers ties an MLB single-game record, and their seven home runs are tied for the most in a loss in MLB history. Teams that have hit seven homers in a game are now 113-6, so the Angels at least have some company.

On the pitching side, starting pitcher Janson Junk allowed six earned runs in 2.1 innings. The two other runs came against reliever Touki Toussaint, who walked five in 4.1 innings of work.

For a team whose ability to find a way to lose in spite of multiple historically talented stars has become a pervasive meme, this may be a new low. The loss lowers the Angels' record to 44-61.
