Onaway baseball, softball battle hard at Grayling; Mackinaw City, Pellston teams also split

GRAYLING – The Onaway baseball team earned a split with Grayling by picking up a 7-4 victory in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Cardinals (12-7) received a pitching win from Austin Veal, who struck out 12, allowed six hits and walked three in six innings of game one.

Offensively, Luke Lovelace finished with a hit and two RBIs, while Cole Selke and Gavin Green each had a hit and an RBI, Jackson Chaskey doubled and scored two runs, and Anthony Santiago doubled and scored a run. Justin Kramer-St. Germain scored a run.

However, the Cardinals fell short of the sweep after losing 21-7 in the nightcap. Andrew Gulley (double, RBI, two runs) led Onaway with two hits. Green (two RBIs, run) and Kramer-St. Germain (double, two RBIs) each registered a hit, Chaskey scored two runs, and Veal and Selke scored a run apiece.

Santiago took the loss on the mound, striking out three, scattering six hits and walking three in 1 2/3 innings. Gulley (three strikeouts) and Kramer-St. Germain (strikeout) both pitched in relief.

Onaway returns to Ski Valley action when it hosts Forest Area on Friday.

Cardinals get enough offense, avenge game one softball loss

GRAYLING – The Onaway softball team recovered from a 10-7 game one loss to Grayling by capturing a 9-7 victory and earning a split in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Cardinals (9-11) were led by two hits apiece from Ema DeMaestri (double, RBI, two runs), Kailyn George (two RBIs, run) and Natalie Hyde (RBI, run). Registering a hit apiece were Carley Karsten (RBI, run), Sadie Decker and Charlotte Box (run). Other contributors were Marley Szymoniak (RBI, run), Layla Box (RBI) and Lesley Lalonde (RBI).

Layla Box was the winning pitcher, striking out two, scattering 11 hits and walking four in six innings.

In game one, George (RBI, two runs) finished with three hits for the Cardinals, who received two hits from Szymoniak (triple, run). Decker (two RBIs, run), DeMaestri (RBI, run) and Lalonde (run) each recorded a hit. Karsten knocked in a run and Charlotte Box scored a run.

Charlotte Box was the losing pitcher, striking out five, allowing seven hits and walking four in five innings.

Onaway hosts Forest Area in Ski Valley action on Friday.

Mackinaw City softball captures sweep over NMCA

MACKINAW CITY – The Mackinaw City softball team improved to .500 in the Northern Lakes Conference by sweeping Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy with 17-14 and 19-5 victories on Monday.

Gracie Beauchamp, who had a team-high three hits, homered, added two RBIs and scored five runs in game one for the Comets (8-12, 4-4 NLC), who received two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored from Jillian Poumade. Chipping in with a hit apiece were Jersey Beauchamp (three RBIs), Rian Esper (two runs) and Abby Brown (two runs). Other contributors included Emily Kruczynski (RBI, two runs), Kenzlie Currie (two runs) and Liz Kruczynski (run). Jersey Beauchamp was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and allowing eight hits in six innings.

INLAND LAKES BASEBALL: Inland Lakes baseball, softball return to action, sweep Mancelona in Ski Valley contests

Kruczynski’s three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored lifted the Comets in the nightcap, while Brown (double, three RBIs), Currie (RBI, four runs), Gracie Beauchamp (RBI, three runs) and Jersey Beauchamp (four runs) each delivered two hits. Esper (triple, three runs), Julia Short (two RBIs) and Poppy Wallace (double, run) had a hit apiece. Poumade scored a run. Jersey Beauchamp was the pitching winner again, striking out three and scattering four hits in four innings.

Mackinaw City travels to face Brimley on Thursday.

Schmalzried, Pellston baseball earn first win

FIFE LAKE – Fueled by a solid pitching performance from senior Jack Schmalzried, the Pellston baseball team earned its first victory of the season by capturing a 3-1 triumph at Forest Area in game two of a Ski Valley Conference doubleheader on Monday.

Schmalzried won on the mound by striking out 13, allowing five hits and walking two in six innings.

Jack Lane led the Hornets (1-15, 1-11 Ski Valley) offensively with two hits, including a double, and scored three runs, while Schmalzried recorded a hit and an RBI, Sam O’Neil doubled, and Ethan Hickman, Noah Hansen and Brett Bonter finished with a hit apiece.

In a 5-0 loss in the opener, Bonter struck out 14, scattered four hits and walked two over five innings. Lane and O’Neil recorded the lone Pellston hits.

Pellston plays at Ellsworth on Wednesday.
