Carl Albert completes undefeated season for first time under Mike Dunn

Carl Albert's (10-0, 6-0 District 5A-2) quest for a second consecutive Class 5A state championship is underway.

In Friday night's come-from-behind victory 38-24 over Piedmont (7-3, 3-3 District 5A-2), the Titans finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time since 2018. It also marked the first undefeated season for third-year head coach Mike Dunn, who formerly served as head coach and athletic director at Del City.

Carl Albert trailed at halftime for just the second time all season before storming back from a 14-point deficit and scoring 28 unanswered points en route to victory.

"Anytime that you play a game like that, which has turned into a rivalry game, you know to ignore the records and predictions and just play," Dunn said.

"We didn't play our best ball early on, but at halftime, we challenged the boys to pick up their intensity, and they did just that. Heading into the playoffs, you've got to live on the edge. We can't afford to have those mistakes early on, so we'll use this game to learn from."

The night came with standard performances from the Titans' OU committed duo of quarterback Kevin Sperry Jr. and running back Xavier Robinson. Sperry threw for 325 yards with a score on the ground and through the air, while Robinson's 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns sealed the game for Carl Albert.

With Class 5A-2's top seed locked up by the Titans in the win, they're set to take on El Reno at home next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

"El Reno is pretty well coached," Dunn said. "Once you get to this point, there are no bad teams. If you can make the playoffs in Class 5A football, you must be a pretty darn good football team. If we play to our standard and come out with the sense of urgency we've shown throughout the last ten weeks, then I like our chances against anybody."

Putnam West clinches playoff berth

As Putnam West prepared for Friday’s game against Tulsa Booker T. Washington, the Patriots knew a victory would secure a Class 6A-II playoff berth.

They also knew a loss would mean their season was over.

And although it ended up being a hard-fought battle, Putnam West will get at least one more week of football.

The ninth-ranked Patriots notched a 34-23 road victory against Tulsa Washington, advancing to a first-round playoff game at Ponca City. It will be Putnam West’s first playoff appearance since 2016.

“It was just back and forth the whole time,” Putnam West first-year coach Gregory Johnson said. “And then we finally got a couple of stops. And they had two turnovers. They had two picks, we had two picks. It just came down to who’s going to make the final play. We ended up making the final few plays toward the end of the game and solidified the win.”

Senior quarterback Shyheim Johnson led Putnam West, rushing for two scores and throwing a touchdown pass to senior Jordan Warrior.

With the victory, Putnam West improved to 5-5 overall and 2-5 in District 6A-II-1, while Tulsa Washington fell to 2-8 and 1-6.

“We just have to play like we did last night,” Johnson said of the Patriots’ upcoming game. “It’s always about the team that makes the least amount of mistakes.”

Bixby rallies, dominates Jenks in second half

Bixby’s undefeated regular season was ruined in Week 10 last year as the Spartans fell to Jenks on national television.

A shocking upset, Bixby’s 58-game win streak was snapped.

When the programs faced off in this year’s edition of the game, Bixby made sure there weren’t any surprises.

Led by three second-half touchdown receptions by junior receiver Blake Hogshooter from sophomore quarterback Carson Kirby, the Class 6A-I top-ranked Spartans earned a 31-14 road victory against No. 6 Jenks.

Bixby trailed 14-7 at halftime, and it appeared Jenks might pull off another upset.

But with the Kirby-Hogshooter connection and Bixby playing well defensively, the Spartans overwhelmed Jenks after the break.

With the win, Bixby improved to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in District 6A-I-1, while Jenks fell to 6-4 and 5-2. Both teams will get first-round playoff byes.

Bixby beat Jenks in the semifinals last year.

If both teams win out in the playoffs, they’ll face off in the championship game.
