OHSAA sectional wrestling | What to know and where Greater Canton teams will compete

The mats are being rolled out and the competitors are getting ready for the biggest stretch of the season for high school wrestling. The Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament begins this weekend as hopefuls look to make an impact in sectional tournaments. Here's what know about sectionals and where Stark County-area schools are competing.

Perry High School Division I sectional

Teams: Dover, Green, McKinley, Massillon, Ellet, Akron North, Lakeside, Firestone, Cle. JFK, Perry.

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class form this sectional will advance to the North Canton district tournament. All eyes will be on nationally-ranked Perry as the Panthers look to start off the postseason on the right foot. Perry is loaded with talent capable of reaching the state tournament. Three big names to watch are senior heavyweight Aidan Fockler, 138-pound senior Charles Curtis and 126-pound senior Mason Rohr. All three are state qualifiers (Fockler is a reigning state champ) and will likely lead a plethora of Perry qualifiers into the district tournament from this event. Other Perry wrestlers ranked in the top 16 by borofanohio.net heading into sectionals are Lincoln Rohr (106), Liston Seibert (113), Emeric McBurney (126), Nate Dulcie (132), Cameron Plotts (144), Brennan Warwick (150), Marshall Geckler (157), Landen Johnson (165), Caige Horak (175), Landon Ristoff (190) and Mike Millin (215). Other schools with wrestlers ranked in the top 16 in their respective weight class by borofanohio.net include athletes such as Massillon's Cody Fair (215) and Chris Fair (285) and Green's Joel Brink (126).

Wadsworth High School Division I sectional

Teams: Avon, Brush, Garfield, Jackson, Nordonia, Solon, Stow, Willoughby South, Wooster, Wadsworth.

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the North Canton district. Jackson is the only Stark County team at this sectional. The Polar Bears are led by Ethan Dimos (ranked 14th by borofanohio.net in the state at 113) and Cooper McKinney (ranked 16th at 157). Both will look to make a statement and advance to North Canton.

Fitch High School Division I sectional

Teams: Aurora, James Rhodes, Lakewood, Hoover, John Adams, John Hay, Brecksville, Mayfield, Normandy, Fitch.

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to North Canton. Hoover is the only Stark team at this sectional. The Vikings have some wrestlers that should be in contention to be back competing in their home gym next weekend. Alex Boske was ranked seventh in the state at 150 by borofanohio.net, while Stam Paxos was ranked 14th at 106.

West Branch High School Division II sectional

Teams: Marlington, Madison, Salem, Alliance, Cloverleaf, Howland, Girard, Field, Firelands, Orange, Garrett Morgan, Tallmadge, Holy Name, West Branch.

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Kenston district. Alliance and Marlington are the schools to watch here. Alliance features senior heavyweight Aidan Mozden and junior 165-pounder Quinn Callock. Mozden was ranked seventh in the state in his weight class by borofanohio.net while Callock was ranked 16th. Senior 106-pounder Camryn Mitchell leads Marlington. Callock was ranked 10th in the state in his weight class by borofanohio.net.

Northwest High School Division II sectional

Teams: Buckeye, Canton South, Canfield, Revere, CVCA, Northwest, Norton, Poland, Shaw, Coventry, Copley, Warrensville Heights, Hoban, VA-SJ.

What to Know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to Kenston. Canton South sophomore Dominic Prosperi is ranked second in the state by borofanohio.net at 106 pounds. Canton South senior Tyler Pugh could make noise at 157 pounds, where he was ranked 13th in the state by borofanohio.net.

Kenston High School Division II sectional

Teams: Louisville, Padua Franciscan, Hubbard, Bay Village, Edgewood, Brookside, Bedford, Rocky River, Lutheran West, Chardon ND-CL, Univ. School, Kent Roosevelt

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class return to Kenston. Louisville features senior Kolten Barker (ranked fourth in the state at 126 by borofanohio.net), freshman Kaiden Barker (fifth at 113) and freshman Aric Kriss (15th at 132).

Northwestern High School Division III sectional

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Independence district. Tuslaw features sophomore Kaden Lawson (ranked sixth in the state at 113 pounds by borofanohio.net) and senior Jake Lyons (sixth at 150).

Rootstown High School Division III sectional

Teams: Rootstown, Triway, St. Thomas Aquinas, Wellsville, Canton Central Catholic, East Palestine, Norwayne, Western Reserve, Elyria Catholic, Chippewa, Southern Local, Loudonville, Crestwood, Clearview, Jackson Milton, United

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Independence district. Central and Aquinas are the local teams at this sectional.

Berkshire High School Division III sectional

Teams: Berkshire, Cardinal, Kirtland, Grand Valley, Brookfield, Wellington, Conneaut, Fairview, Liberty, Pymatuning Valley, Southeast, South Range, Springfield, Fairless, Garfield, Lake County Perry

What to know: The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Independence district. Fairless is the only Stark team competing at this event.
