Here's what you need to know 100 days before Ohio State opens the 2023 season against the Hoosiers.

Ohio State football has not lost a season opener since 1999

It's been a long time since Ohio State started a season with a loss.

The Buckeyes have not lost a season-opening game since 1999, falling to No. 12 Miami at home 23-12 as the No. 9 team in the country to begin a 6-6 season.

Since then, Ohio State has a 23-game streak of season-opening wins including ranked wins against No. 17 Washington in 2003 and No. 5 Notre Dame in 2022. The Buckeyes also have wins against Big Ten opponents like Indiana (2017), Nebraska (2020) and Minnesota (2021) during the streak.

Starting with the Buckeyes' win against Fresno State to begin the 2000 season, Ohio State has beaten opponents by an average of 27.8 points in season-opening games.

While it has been a long time since Ohio State started a season with a loss, it's been even longer since it lost to Indiana.

The Buckeyes have won 27 straight games against Indiana since 1991. Ohio State has not lost against Indiana since 1988 when the Hoosiers beat the Buckeyes 41-7 in Bloomington. The Buckeyes' last non-win against Indiana came in a 27-27 tie during the 1990 season.

Ohio State last opened a season against Indiana in 2017 when the Buckeyes beat the Hoosiers 49-21 in Bloomington helped by a four-touchdown day by quarterback J.T. Barrett and a record-breaking performance by running back J.K. Dobbins, who recorded 181 rushing yards in his collegiate debut.

In 2022, Ohio State beat Indiana 56-14 in Columbus when quarterback C.J. Stroud threw five touchdowns to Marvin Harrison Jr., Cade Stover, Emeka Egbuka and Kamryn Babb.

Ohio State will have a different quarterback behind center in 2023.

After two seasons of Stroud as the Buckeyes' starting quarterback, either Kyle McCord or Devin Brown will lead the offense in the season opener against Indiana with a number of returning skill players like running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, along with Harrison, Egbuka, Stover and Julian Fleming in the passing game.

But quarterback is not the only question Ohio State has on offense heading into 2023.

With the two guard spots on the offensive line secured in Donovan Jackson and Matthew Jones, Ohio State will try and replace three NFL draft picks at tackle and center. Players like Josh Fryar, Carson Hinzman, Zen Michalski and Tegra Tshabola will each vie for playing time along with Louisiana Monroe transfer Vic Cutler and San Diego State transfer Josh Simmons.

Ohio State's defense has many familiar faces heading into the 2023 season.

Whether it's a defensive line of Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau, Mike Hall Jr. and Tyleik Williams, a linebacker tandem of Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg, safety Lathan Ransom or cornerback Denzel Burke, the Buckeyes are expected to have experience at key spots on their defense against Indiana Sept. 2.

Open spots remain at the second cornerback position where Jordan Hancock and Mississippi transfer Davison Igbinosun will fight for snaps in fall camp, while the nickel safety position could come down to a battle between Cameron Martinez and Syracuse transfer Ja'Had Carter.
