Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 4? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games
Community bragging rights were on the line across central Ohio in Week 4 of the high school football season.
Rivalry games included Big Walnut at Delaware Hayes, Central Crossing at Grove City, Dublin Jerome at Dublin Coffman, Hilliard Darby at Hilliard Davidson, Olentangy Berlin at Olentangy Liberty, Olentangy Orange at Olentangy and Pickerington Central at Pickerington North.
Dave Purpura covered the Pickerington showdown, Frank DiRenna went to Marysville at Hilliard Bradley and Andy Resnik checked out Canal Winchester's pursuit of a 4-0 start at Worthington Kilbourne.
Friday quick hits
Pickerington North 39, Pickerington Central 34
Another wild classic in the rivalry went the way of the host Panthers (4-0), who defeated Central (2-2) for only the fifth time in 22 meetings and deviated slightly from their personality of the first three weeks. After thriving on the run, North got huge plays from wide receiver Preston Bowman, whose first three catches went for 153 yards and two touchdowns — including an 85-yarder on the second play from scrimmage. Bowman, who finished with five catches for 205 yards, also pulled in a touchdown with just his right hand in the final seconds before the half. “We knew it would be an ‘air raid’ game and we prepared for that,” Bowman said. “Going back to summertime, (quarterback) Landon (O’Connell) and I worked on this kind of stuff every single day. All this comes from little stuff like that.”
The Panthers passed for 277 yards and ran for 206. Michael Taylor had 54 yards and two scores on 10 carries, Sam Williams-Dixon led the way with 97 yards on 14 carries and Dorian Hamilton added 10 touches for 50 yards. But perhaps the 18 most memorable yards North gained on the ground came from Angelo McCullom, a defensive lineman and Illinois commit, who took a handoff on fourth-and-1 from the Central 18 with 1:37 to go and rumbled his way outside, then up the sideline for what became the clinching touchdown. It was McCullom’s second carry of the year, and both were successful first-down conversions. “I started running toward the B-gap, bounced it out, somebody blocked the (cornerback) and then I was able to cut it inside,” said McCullom, who had a sack near midfield two drives earlier. “They just wanted me to get that first down, but I wanted to do my best.”
Even in the immediate aftermath of a rare loss in the rivalry, Central coach Jeff Lomonico cracked a smile and delivered a deadpan answer when asked where his team goes from here. “Gahanna,” he replied, referring to the Tigers’ opponent next weekend. But he also patted himself on the chest in discussing the defense, which he continues to coach in his first season leading the program, and the most points Central has allowed in a game since a 44-3 loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier in the 2020 Division I state final. “39-34, that’s on the defense, that’s on me,” Lomonico said. “Our effort is there. I have to make better calls. We’ll be fine.”
Central was almost as balanced as North, passing for 171 yards and rushing for 167. Quarterback Rocco Williams was 11 of 20, throwing touchdowns to Chris Turntine (12 yards) and Sherone White Jr. (48). Aaron Heller ran 10 times for 50 yards and two touchdowns, and Kaejuan Alexander added 55 yards and a score on 14 carries. The Tigers took leads of 21-20 and 27-26 in the second half on White’s touchdown catch and Heller’s 1-yard run, respectively, and got within five points with 17 seconds left on the pass to Turntine.

Hilliard Bradley 38, Marysville 14
In a game that was tied at 7 after one quarter, the Jaguars scored 31 unanswered points to pull ahead 38-7 late in the third. Bradley avenged losses to Marysville the past three seasons and now trails the series 4-2. Senior quarterback Bradyn Fleharty helped lead the Jaguars, completing 10 of 20 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 142 yards and two scores on 17 carries. “It’s a great start to the season,” said Fleharty, a Yale commit. “Our game plan is 1-0 every game. We had a great halftime and our coaches got us motivated going into the second half. We had a great game plan and we started trusting our guys more and our guys started making plays.”
While Fleharty led the offense, the defense stymied Marysville (2-2) for most of the second half as the Jaguars pulled away. After allowing 193 yards in the first half, the defense allowed 121 in the second half. “We made a ton of mistakes in that first half, a bunch of penalties,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “We looked like we weren’t sure of ourselves. The kids were really pressing. Luckily, we have an old defense. We have a lot of older guys on defense with a lot of experience and they held it together for us and gave us a chance to get it going on offense.”
Marysville coach Brent Johnson was pleased with his team’s effort in the first half and a 14-7 deficit at halftime. He pointed to two turnovers in the second half as keys to the loss. Matt Krutowskis led the Monarchs, rushing for 93 yards on 14 carries and scoring his team’s first touchdown (3 yards) on the final play of the first quarter to tie the game at 7. “The third quarter was awful,” Johnson said. “We came out and made them work to go down the field and held them to a field goal and then, bam, the (dam) broke. We turned the ball over and they scored a quick touchdown. That’s what Hilliard Bradley does. They’re a good football team.”
It’s the Jaguars’ first 4-0 start since 2017, when they went on to finish 11-1, losing to Pickerington Central 42-31 in the second round of the Division I, Region 3 playoffs. Bradley hosts Dublin Jerome (2-2) in Week 5. “We absolutely can play better,” LoParo said. “That’s what I’m going to impose upon our staff. We have to get better. We have to press now. It’s not time to slow it down.”

Canal Winchester 35, Worthington Kilbourne 0
For a few moments, Kilbourne (0-4) had the upper hand against visiting Canal Winchester (4-0). Braden Pullins intercepted a Maxton Brunner pass early in the first quarter and returned it 34 yards to the Canal Winchester 6. The Wolves, however, could not punch it into the end zone on the next four plays, and the Indians went down the field to take the lead. Brunner atoned for the interception, hooking up with Karson Martino for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Kilbourne had a chance to keep the game at 7-0 late in the second quarter, but Braylon Beckwith got open over the middle and made a sliding catch in the end zone on fourth-and-18 from the 23. Martino helped set up the touchdown with a 48-yard catch and run. Those were the only three completions for Brunner, who made it 21-0 with a 70-yard touchdown run early in the third. Brunner finished with 90 yards rushing on 10 carries, pacing a ground attack that ran 40 times for 238 yards. Kilbourne was held to 43 yards rushing and 36 yards passing.
It’s the first time since 2019 that Canal Winchester is 4-0 and Kilbourne is 0-4. That season, the Indians went 9-2 and lost in the first round of the Division II playoffs, while the Wolves finished 1-9. This was the OCC-Capital opener for both teams. Next week, Canal Winchester hosts Franklin Heights (1-3) and Kilbourne visits Dublin Scioto (0-4) in the Battle of Hard Road.

Lancaster 20, New Albany 0
Lancaster (2-2) recorded its first shutout in six years while dropping visiting New Albany to 1-3. The Golden Gales were coming off back-to-back losses in which they allowed a combined 99 points. They limited the Eagles to 229 total yards and stopped them 11 times on 15 third-down conversion attempts. New Albany never made it past midfield in the second half. “Mentally, 100 percent, it was a make-or-break game for us,” senior J.D. Thomas said. “But at the same time, for us, it was all about practice and preparing the right way, and we needed to bring the energy into practice. The past two weeks it just wasn’t there, and this week, we focused on doing our job, bringing energy and focusing on each play.”
Thomas kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired in the first half and a 35-yarder with 4:20 left in the third quarter to make it 6-0. Lancaster’s defense helped set up two fourth-quarter touchdowns with stops on fourth down. Cole Dickerson scored on a 3-yard run with 10:24 left, and Xavier Goss’ 1-yard TD run put the game away with 7:03 remaining. Quarterback Brody Burke completed 10 of 15 passes for a career-high 156 yards. Lancaster’s offense finished with 160 yards rushing and 156 passing. Dickerson had 96 yards rushing on 24 carries.
