Rivals Archbishop Hoban and Walsh Jesuit met Friday night in the OHSAA Division II, Region 5 football final at the University of Akron. Hoban and Walsh were the region's first and second seeds, respectively. It was the second meeting for Hoban and Walsh this season after Hoban beat visiting Walsh 57-7 on Sept. 29. The Knights won again Friday, but in a game that was much tighter throughout the night

Hoban wins OHSAA football regional championship

Hoban defeated Walsh 30-6 to advance to a state semifinal. The Knights (12-1) will play Avon, which defeated Highland 28-14. The site for the state semifinal will be announced Saturday. Walsh ends it season with a 12-2 record, both losses coming against Hoban.

Tylan Boykin scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run and Jeremy Hammel makes an extra point kick.

Hoban had the ball first-and-10 on the Walsh 36-yard line and looked to open the half with another score. Tylan Boykin looked to the right for Parker Falkenstein, but Buffalo commit John Keough kept the inside position and picked off Boykin on the 6-yard line with 10:14 left in the third quarter. Hoban took a 7-0 lead with 4:53 to go in the second quarter when Xavier Williams ran for a 22-yard touchdown and Jeremy Hammel converted an extra point kick.

The drive was setup after Hoban's Tysen Campbell grabbed an interception. Brayton Feister had a big run and reception from quarterback Tylan Boykin during the scoring drive.

Walsh defense, penalties keeps Hoban scoreless

Hoban drove the ball to the Walsh 1-yard-line, but did not score after three penalties marched the Knights back to the 26-yard-line.

Hoban was tagged with a personal foul, a hold and a false start.

Facing fourth-and-1 on their own 45-yard line, Walsh gambled and lost.

Brock Sherman took the handoff 6 yards deep in the backfield and tried to hurdle the pile. He got stuffed and after an 11-yard gain by Caleb Jones on the first play, Hoban has the ball on the Walsh 34 with 1:35 left.

Dylan Hereford with his second takeaway squashes a Hoban football drive

The Knights had the ball first-and-10 on the Warriors 29 when a fumble by Brayton Feister fell into the hands of Dylan Hereford.

Walsh took over on the 25 with 4:22 left in a scoreless game.

A holding call by the Warriors hurt a potential first down. Walsh goes three-and-out to give Hoban the ball on the 50-yard line with 10:06 left in the first quarter.

That drive lasted one play as Dylan Hereford stepped in front of a Tylan Boykin slant pass and returned it to the Warriors 42 with 9:58 left in the first quarter.

Who leads the all-time series in the Walsh Jesuit-Hoban football rivalry?

Walsh leads the overall series 30-23. Hoban has won the past 10 matchups, including 32-20 last year at Walsh and 57-7 at Hoban this year. Hoban and Walsh played in a Division II, Region 5 final won by the Knights 49-30 in 2021.

  • The series started in 1974 and the teams have played every year since with 50 regular-season games and three playoff games. Walsh won the first nine games from 1974-1982 until Hoban's first win in 1983.

  • Walsh won nine games in a row from 1992-1999, including a playoff win in 1998, to lead the series 22-5.

  • Walsh topped Hoban in the regular season in 2002 and then Hoban beat Walsh in a playoff game. The Knights went 8-3 against the Warriors from 2000-2009.
