Well-placed music decides the tone of a television show. With the right songs, a show can make a lasting impression on its viewers, but choose the wrong ones, and someone may not get past the first episode. No one knows that better than Jen Malone, the music supervisor for hit shows like Euphoria, Yellowjackets, and now, Wednesday.

In case you’ve somehow missed one of the exciting new shows on Netflix right now, Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams. Yes, that Wednesday Addams, as she attends Nevermore, a boarding school for teens with supernatural powers. Wednesday soon finds herself embroiled in multiple mysteries and murders, and has to save herself and her friends before it’s too late. For a show so dark and gloomy, a strong soundtrack sets the mood.

Season 2 of Euphoria, for example, contained a strong mix of songs both new and old, covering multiple genres, including rock, pop and classical. Plus, original music from the artist Labrinth, a long-time collaborator on the show. Euphoria is rife with dramatic moments and surreal scenes, so it makes sense to cover a large array on the musical spectrum.

Wednesday, on the other hand, has a very specific vibe. The show (and its eponymous character) is all about those who don’t conform with what “normal” is, so choosing the newest pop songs and more mainstream tunes may not always fit what the show is going for. And that includes an unexpected (but well-placed) choice for the show's popular dance sequence. But considering Wednesday’s success, it’s clear the people working behind the show knew exactly what music would fit the dark academia environment. Here’s the official soundtrack for Wednesday.
