SOUTH BEND − The Micah Shrewsberry Era for Notre Dame men’s basketball moved two steps closer to reality this week with the first official practice Monday and Tuesday’s release of the 2023-24 schedule.

Here's what you need to know about the slate for the Irish, who finished 11-21 overall, 3-17 and 14th place in the 15-team Atlantic Coast Conference last season.

∎ Notre Dame opens league play Dec. 2 at Miami (Fla.) at noon. Shrewsberry’s first ACC home game is Dec. 30 against Virginia, also at noon.

∎ The Irish play four of their first six league games at home, where they went 3-7 in league play and 11-8 overall last season. Six of Notre Dame’s final 10 league games are on the road, where the Irish went 0-10 in ACC play, 0-13 overall last season.

∎ Five games (four in ACC play) have a new broadcast TV home on The CW network, which replaces the previous RSN (Regional Sports Network) spot that was Marquee Sports Network the last two seasons.

∎ Repeat league opponents are Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami (Fla.), Virginia and Virginia Tech. Boston College and Georgia Tech have been permanent repeat opponents since Notre Dame joined the league in 2013.

∎ Notre Dame’s one marquee non-conference home game is Dec. 16 with the renewal of the rivalry with former Big East colleague Georgetown and first-year coach Ed Cooley. The programs have not met since 2013.

∎ Notre Dame’s marquee non-conference road game is Dec. 9 in Milwaukee with the conclusion of a two-game series with Marquette, expected to be a Top 10 team in preseason. The Golden Eagles won last season’s meeting 79-64 in South Bend.

∎ The regular season officially begins at home on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. against Niagara, coached by former college point guard Greg Paulus, who picked Duke over Notre Dame coming out of high school.

∎ The Irish play one exhibition game – Nov. 1 against Hanover (Ind.) College. Shrewsberry is a 1999 Hanover graduate. Notre Dame’s second exhibition slot will be a “secret” October scrimmage against Xavier, likely in Indianapolis. It’s the third secret scrimmage for Notre Dame, which played DePaul in 2022 in Chicago and Cincinnati in Indianapolis in 2018.
