Notre Dame football vs. Oregon State final score, highlights: Irish dominate depleted Beavers

It was no Sam Hartman, no problem for Notre Dame Friday. The Fighting Irish dominated the Oregon State Beavers in the Sun Bowl behind strong performances from several sources, winning Marcus Freeman's second bowl game with a 40-8 final score.

Steve Angeli, the Irish running game and the Irish defense were all dominant in their respects. Angeli completed 15 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns while the Irish ground game combined for 236 yards (Jadarian Price paved the way with 106). The defense didn't allow a third-down conversion until there was 1:30 left in the game.

Oregon State very much looked like a program in flux, with quarterback Ben Gulbranson never really finding a rhythm and the ground game suffering. A fake punt in the first half that was clearly borne out of a lack of offensive progress was, in some respects, a death knell for the Beavers. The game only got worse from there.

REQUIRED READING: Quick observations from Notre Dame football Sun Bowl game vs. Oregon State

Angeli is thought to be next in line for the Notre Dame quarterback position, and if Friday was any indication, the team's future is in good hands. He was hyper-efficient, and the he was helped along by an utterly relentless ground game from Notre Dame.

For Notre Dame and Freeman, it was clearly a statement game of sorts. Notre Dame never took its foot off the gas, and was going for it on fourth-and-goal up double digits in the second half. It was Notre Dame's biggest bowl margin of victory in program history, no small feat when talking about the Golden Domers.

Jordan Faison was the game's MVP with five catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, after shaking open seemingly all game. Of Angeli's performance he said upon accepting the trophy: "We saw it coming."

5:16 p.m. -- Gulbranson was trying to throw and after initially be ruled a fumble the pass is called incomplete.

5:15 p.m. -- Oregon State continues to fight. On third down Gulbranson finds Irish for the first third down conversion of the game with 1:30 left.

Touchdown Notre Dame: Notre Dame 40, Oregon State 8

5:09 p.m. -- Notre Dame powers inside once again, and the Irish have crossed the 40-mark. Dominant game.

5:06 p.m. -- Also, Kenny Minchey is now in.

5:05 p.m. -- Devyn Ford now gets involved as he runs outside for 19. Notre Dame is spreading out the reps.

Touchdown Oregon State: Notre Dame 33, Oregon State 8

5 p.m. -- It was ruled complete and Oregon State then runs the wildcat to Voltin, an o-lineman, to convert for two. Good series there for the Beavers to avoid a shutout.

4:58 p.m. -- Well that's fun. Oregon State direct snaps to Irish who throws for a first on fourth-and-1. Next play, Gulbranson throws a great ball to the end zone, seemingly for six. It was called incomplete but review may overturn it.

4:56 p.m. -- Oregon State had a great opportunity for a big play but Gulbranson misses long and wide, then on third-and-shot Oregon State comes up short. The Beavers will go for it here on fourth.

Touchdown Notre Dame: Notre Dame 33, Oregon State 0

4:50 p.m. -- Notre Dame doesn't take long to capitalize, as Love scores to further extend the lead.

4:49 p.m. -- Price now bursts up the middle into the third level of the defense, running for 54 to the Oregon State 18-yard line. Oladapo drags him down but not before a huge gain.

Safety Notre Dame: Notre Dame 26, Oregon State 0

4:45 p.m. -- Further review rules that it was a safety, seemingly correctly based on replay.

4:44 p.m. -- Notre Dame looked like it may have had a safety, but forward progress was given. It's under review now, but the call on the field is no safety.

4:41 p.m. -- Notre Dame wanted a disrespect touchdown. Fourth-and-goal from the five and Notre Dame tried to dive up the middle, but Oregon State stops the Irish short. Oregon State will start from the one.

End of Third Quarter: Notre Dame 24, Oregon State 0

4:30 p.m. -- To say Notre Dame is looking for a backbreaker might be redundant at this point, but the quarter ends with another Angeli scramble.

4:28 p.m. -- Oregon State is just looking for any kind of spark. On fourth-and-5 it went for it again, and Gulbranson was sacked from behind as he desperately looked to throw it away. The cascade continues.

4:25 p.m. -- Fenwick is now hurt for Oregon State and being tended to. More tough breaks for an offense that can't take many more tough breaks.

Touchdown Notre Dame: Notre Dame 24, Oregon State 0

4:22 p.m. -- This game is getting out of hand. On third-and-7, Angeli finds Faison over the middle for another touchdown to extend the lead to 24. At a certain point, it's just player-vs.-player, and Faison keeps winning that matchup.

4:20 p.m. -- Angeli continues to run well. Standing in the pocket he ducked out for a solid game as Notre Dame continues to drive. It's been in bunches and the Irish are back inside the Oregon State 20.

4:13 p.m. -- Oregon State will have to punt once again after another three-and-out. Notre Dame's defense is not letting the Beavers gain any ground.

Field Goal Notre Dame: Notre Dame 17, Oregon State 0

4:04 p.m. -- Notre Dame kicks a field goal to push the lead after sputtering again. Solid start to the half, if imperfect.

4:01 p.m. -- Really nice throw from Angeli there to Faison. Not perfect but he gave Faison a chance and Faison hauled it in for 33.

4 p.m. -- Notre Dame is playing a death by 1,000 cuts type of game. By consistently being in third-and-4 or shorter, the Irish continue to convert at a high rate. A delay of game does, however, put them behind the sticks here.

3:55 p.m. -- Notre Dame gets the ball to start the half. In a tough break for the Beavers, they will be without Bolden for the rest of the game after he tweaked his hamstring.

Halftime: Notre Dame 14, Oregon State 0

3:30 p.m. -- Oregon State's Hail Mary is picked off, and we go into the half with the Irish up 14-0.

3:26 p.m. -- Oregon State makes its biggest play so far as Gulbranson finds Irish deep to the 38-yard line. Gulbranson then finds Fenwick but a hold wipes it out. Just five seconds left, that's a backbreaker.

3:25 p.m. -- Oregon State goes for a short gain and then takes a timeout. Both teams had all three heading into this series.

Touchdown Notre Dame: Notre Dame 14, Oregon State 0

3:20 p.m. -- Price goes up the middle and walks in for six. The Irish are simply bullying Oregon State on the ground.

3:19 p.m. -- Faison's controller is all B-buttons. Angeli hits him on third-and-short for a first down and a pair of spins. Price then goes up the middle to the Oregon State 1-yard line.

3:18 p.m. -- Targeting is erased and that brings up third-and-3 for Notre Dame. 1:17 left in the half.

3:15 p.m. -- Price went for a solid gain once again, and the initial call here is targeting. But the call is being reviewed, questionable on if it stands.

3:14 p.m. -- That play seemingly took the wind out of the sails of the Beavers. Notre Dame gets 13 then 11 yards on back-to-back plays, and it's already down to Oregon State's 20-yard line.

3:08 p.m. -- The Beavers sputter once again, as two completions lead to third-and-10. Oregon State goes back to the ground and goes for the fake on fourth-and-6, but Notre Dame was ready. No chance there, and Notre Dame gets it in OSU territory.

3:06 p.m. -- Best throw all day from Gulbranson to start the drive. Short-armed, quick release to Jesiah Irish for a first down to the Notre Dame 45-yard line.

3:03 p.m. -- Notre Dame's coverage gets outkicked and Bolden returns for 15. Oregon State will start from its own 31-yard line.

3:02 p.m. -- Angeli gets sacked again. Oregon State only rushed four but simply overpowered the Irish offensive line. Now on third-and-15, Notre Dame goes back on the ground and gets stopped short. Punt incoming from the Irish.

3 p.m. -- Despite the offensive struggles, Oregon State's defense is playing well. Greathouse got bottled up on the outside, and after a good gain on the ground from Angeli Notre Dame retains possession despite a fumble. Scary moment there leads to third-and-inches. Love goes up the middle for a first, a common sight on third-and-short in this game.

2:55 p.m. -- The Irish get the Beavers into third-and-14, and despite a completion it's fourth down against for the Beavers. Oregon State punts it away, and Notre Dame will start from its own 8-yard line. Irish defense continues to impress.

2:54 p.m. -- Notre Dame stripped Gulbranson with a sack, great speed from Jean-Baptiste.

2:53 p.m. -- No separation from Bolden for Oregon State and Gulbranson overthrew him. Next play, however, Bolden makes a great catch and gets a first on a swing screen. Lot of speed from that receiver slot for the Beavers.

2:48 p.m. -- Oregon State finally got Notre Dame into something other than third-and-2 or less and gets to Angeli to force fourth down. Notre Dame will kick from 50, and miss left.

2:46 p.m. -- Notre Dame is hammering away at Oregon State. Two straight run plays on third and fourth down give the Irish a first to continue the drive.

End of First Quarter: Notre Dame 7, Oregon State 0

2:40 p.m. -- This has the makings of a big game for Thomas, who gets freed up on a crossing route and goes for 26. Notre Dame is back in Oregon State territory.

2:38 p.m. -- Oregon State's front is having a lot of trouble with these ND running backs. Price goes up the middle for six to start the drive, then out of the pistol he gets bottled up.

2:33 p.m. -- Speed, of course, isn't everything. Notre Dame lost contain of Gulbranson there, who scrambled for nine. But on third down he misses Bolden, and Oregon State has to punt again.

2:32 p.m. -- Notre Dame's defense, to its credit, looks fast so far today. Whether OSU tries to run inside or outside there simply isn't much space to be found.

Touchdown Notre Dame: Notre Dame 7, Oregon State 0

2:26 p.m. -- Notre Dame faltered for two plays but Angeli finds Jayden Thomas on a stick route for six. Great job by the Irish to get six after struggling on first and second down.

2:23 p.m. -- The Notre Dame running backs continue to have success, as not Love goes with a one-cut burst for another nine. Next play gets the Irish inside the 5-yard line of OSU. It's now first-and-goal for Notre Dame.

2:20 p.m. -- Notre Dame immediately comes out with power. In third-and-1 the Irish go 0 dive to Payne for a first down. Next play, Angeli finds Faison for a huge gain down to the Oregon State 30. Great pass. Next play Payne goes for nine as the Irish find their rhythm.

2:18 p.m. -- Notre Dame very nearly got to Gulbranson on third down, and Gulbranson had to throw it away. Oregon State will punt down to the Notre Dame 4-yard line, and Angeli will have a lot of field ahead of him.

2:16 p.m. -- Ben Gulbranson is under center for the Beavers with DJ Uigalelei out for the Beavers. On his first play he hits Silas Bolden on a screen, who bounces outside for a first down. Two plays later Notre Dame has Oregon in third-and-6.

2:15 p.m. -- Notre Dame will kick to Oregon State to start the game, and we are underway in El Paso.
