Notre Dame football: Miami (FL) no longer on the schedule for 2024

Few rivalries can be defined by a t-shirt but Notre Dame vs. Miami fits that mold.  Three simple words tell you pretty much everything you need to know about how the two feel about each other.

Catholics vs. Convicts.

Say no more.

You hear those words and flashbacks to 1988 immediately come to mind regardless of who you’re a fan of.

The once-annual football rivalry is a shell of itself now as the Irish and Hurricanes only meet when the rotation of Notre Dame’s ACC games calls for it.

That is, unless Miami over-books themselves and has to do some rearranging to their schedule.

Although Miami seems to be looking to get out of the ACC, they’re still a member.  As long as they are, they’ll have eight conference games and four non-conference games each year.

I’m not sure how an athletic director makes this kind of oversight but someone did and it’s fairly laughable for it to occur.  As a result Miami won’t travel to Notre Dame in 2024 but will instead play all non-ACC contests in their home state.

The Miami schedule will consist of those four non-ACC games to be played against:

at Florida
vs. Florida A&M
vs. Ball State
at South Florida.

If you’re scoring at home, all non-conference games will be played in the state of Florida.

Miami moving the South Bend trip to 2026 means that Notre Dame’s previously completed 2024 schedule now has a hole.  As it currently sits, Notre Dame’s 2024 slate is:

  • 08/31 – at Texas A&M

  • 09/07 – vs Northern Illinois

  • 09/14 – at Purdue

  • 09/21 – Miami (Ohio)

  • 09/28 – Louisville

  • 10/12 – Stanford

  • 10/19 – at Georgia Tech (at Mercedes-Benz Stadium)

  • 10/26 – vs Navy (in East Rutherford, NJ)

  • 11/09 – Florida State

  • 11/16 – Virginia

  • 11/30 – at USC

As you can see above, losing Miami from the schedule in 2024 leaves a rather lackluster 2024 home schedule.  Florida State should continue it’s climb under Mike Norvell and that could certainly be a top-10 match-up but the rest?

Northern Illinois, Miami (Ohio), Louisville, Stanford, and Virginia?

Good luck to those in the ticket office.

Miami (FL) returns to South Bend in 2026

To make good on the issue Miami (FL) will now make the trip to South Bend in 2026 instead.  It’ll be Miami’s first trip to Notre Dame since 2016 when the eventual 4-8 Irish took down the Canes 30-27.

Again, the two will meet in Miami in 2025 for the first time since Miami’s 41-9 beatdown of the Irish in 2017.

Notre Dame Open Dates in 2024

Who will replace Miami on Notre Dame’s schedule in 2024?

Your guess is as good as any but the Irish only currently have open dates on October 5 and November 23.  I’m guessing that Marcus Freeman and company don’t want to play 11-straight games before getting to their bye week so theoretically you can cross off that November 23 date.

So who out there wants to schedule Notre Dame right when the conference slate is getting underway for many?

Here are 12 teams we certainly wouldn’t mind seeing the Irish play that aren’t currently on the schedule.
