North High School's boys basketball won Team of the Year last week at the Central Mass High School Sports Awards, presented by DCU-Digital Federal Credit Union.

Other finalists were Shrewsbury girls hockey and West Boylston football.

North established itself as one of the top teams in the state early this season, and on March 19 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, the Polar Bears proved they were, in fact, the best. North defeated Needham, 73-64, to become the first Division 1 public school from Worcester to win a state championship.

North, which entered the state tournament as the No. 6 seed, defeated Wellesley, Beverly, Brockton and Newton North to reach the Division 1 state final for the first time since 1980. North was the first Worcester public school to reach the Division 1 final since 1997. The Polar Bears finished their extraordinary season 24-2, and made their classmates, teachers and alumni, as well as the city of Worcester, proud.

Following their historic victory, accolades for the Polar Bears included a rolling rally through the streets of Worcester, the key to the city, a visit to the Massachusetts State House, and throwing first pitches at Polar Park.

The Central Mass High School Sports Awards are part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards program, the largest of its kind in the nation with regional shows and now a national show later this summer.
