Nordhoff High senior Quin Seider has met one of the biggest goals of his young swimming career.

Qualifying for this summer’s U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Indianapolis.

Swimming in a time trial last Saturday in Mission Viejo alongside Olympian Brooks Curry, The Star’s two-time Boys Swimmer of the Year met the qualifying standard of 49.99 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle.

The 18-year-old swam the 100 free in 49.84 during the Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions at the Marguerite Aquatic Center.

“This has been his goal,” said Wenke Seider, Quin’s mother and club coach. “He feels rewarded for the work that he’s put in.”

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be held June 15-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The men’s 100 free is scheduled for June 18-19.

Seider hinted at what qualifying for Olympic trials would mean to him last June.

“It would be a big deal for me to get that kind of experience against the best swimmers in the country,” Seider told The Star. “It becomes a big goal.”

The Arizona State commit competes for Nordhoff High and the Ojai Heatwaves swim club. He was swimming unattached in last weekend’s meet.

Seider was fourth in 50.17 in the 100 free in Friday’s event. Less than two-tenths away from the standard, he returned to swim the time trial alongside elite competition.

“Just having that kind of energy in the time trial (helped),” said Wenke Seider. “That definitely was awesome.”

Seider was also third in the 50 free in 23.06, fifth in the 200 free in 1:53.04, and ninth in the 100 butterfly in 56.09.

He recorded personal-best times in three of the four events.

Seider is also less than three-tenths away from the qualifying standard in the 50 free. He will have chances to qualify in that event at several meets in the coming weeks.

The three-time section champion also has his final CIF-Southern Section and CIF-State championship meets in Walnut and Clovis next month.
