No. 9 Allen stuffs Shattuck with second-half rally
Feb. 24—CHICKASHA — The ninth-ranked Allen Mustangs overcame a giant outing by Shattuck standout Brice Bledsoe and defeated the Indians 66-53 in a Class A Area Tournament consolation contest Thursday at Chickasha High School.
Coach Greg Mills' squad improved to 24-2 on the year and was set to face No. 18 Southwest Covenant in another area tournament contest Friday. A win in that contest would mean the Mustangs would play for a trip to the Class A State Tournament tonight in Chickasha.
Allen 66, Shattuck 53
The Mustangs needed a second-half rally to get past the upset-minded Indians.
Shattuck led 13-8 after the first period and outscored Allen 20-14 in the second quarter to build a 33-22 halftime advantage.
The Mustangs dominated the third period — thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers by Garrett Nix — and used a 22-9 surge to overtake the Indians 44-42.
Allen scored 22 more points in the fourth frame to secure the come-from-behind win. The Mustangs made 12-of-19 free throws during the game-ending 22-13 run, including a 7-of-10 showing by Brayden Tatum.
Freshman post player Gus Matthews finished with a huge double-double for the Mustangs that included team-highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds. Tatum added 17 points, all in the second half.
Easton Ledo registered 13 points for Allen and Nix also reached double figures with 10 points and also scored all his points after the intermission.
Bledsoe exploded for a game-high 32 points for the Indians, including five 3-pointers. Ben Elam also hit double digits for Shattuck with 11 points.
Braden Bledsoe knocked down two 3-point baskets and scored seven points for the Indians.
Asher boys edge No. 20 Carney in Class B
BRIDGE CREEK — The 17th-ranked Asher Indians needed a fourth-quarter comeback to upend No. 20 Carney 46-42 in a Class B Area Tournament consolation contest Thursday at Bridge Creek High School.
The Indians improved to 20-9 on the season and were scheduled to face No. 8 Earlsboro Friday. The Wildcats (24-5) survived and advanced with a 53-52 win over Chattanooga.
Carney ended its year at 19-11.
Asher 46, Carney 42
The Indians held a slim 19-17 lead at halftime before Carney used a 16-9 run in the third period to grab a 33-28 advantage. Asher rallied by outscoring the Bulldogs 18-9 to end the game.
Asher featured a balanced offensive attack led by Andrew Overstreet and Mikey Vanschuyver who tallied 11 points apiece. Overstreet made a trio of 3-pointers for the Indians and Vanschuyver made one shot from long range.
Raygan Kuhlman just missed double figures with nine points, including a pair of triples. Gunnar Lehman also connected on one 3-point basket for the Indians.
Ryan Townsend led all scorers with 21 points for Carney and made four 3-point shots. Johh Martin was next with eight points. Kam Toley hit two fourth-quarter 3-pointers for the Bulldogs for all six of his points.
