No. 13 Oregon outscores Texas Tech in a fourth-quarter rally for the win

It was a West Texas-sized rally that won’t soon be forgotten.

No. 13 Oregon, trailing by two scores to start the fourth quarter, finished with a flurry of points as it defeated Texas Tech 38-30 Saturday night in a nonconference football game in Lubbock.

Kicker Camden Lewis put the Ducks (2-0) in the lead, 31-30, with 1:10 to play and 35 seconds later, Oregon linebacker Jeffrey Bassa stunned the crowd of nearly 60,000 at Jones AT&T Stadium when he picked off a pass thrown by quarterback Tyler Shough — the former Duck — and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

Oregon wide receiver Troy Franklin (11) scores a touchdown against Texas Tech during the first half of the Sept. 9 game in Lubbock, Texas.

Oregon safety Bryan Addison sealed the victory with an interception on a last-ditch heave by Shough into the end zone as time expired.

All told, the Ducks outscored the Red Raiders (0-2) 20-3 in the fourth quarter, which began with Oregon trailing 27-18.

But two plays and three seconds into the final quarter, Bucky Irving scored on a 3-yard run and Lewis followed soon after with a 23-yard field goal as the Ducks went up 28-27 with 10:27 to play.

A field goal for Texas Tech put it back on top, 30-28, with 5:13 to play.

Oregon followed with a 10-play, 64-yard drive that ate up 4:03 of game time and stalled at the 11-yard line, leading to Lewis’ go-ahead field goal.

Texas Tech, needing only a field goal for the win, was at midfield when Shough went back to pass and was pressured by defensive end Brandon Dorlus, who got a piece of Shough’s throwing arm. The ball sailed off target and right to Bassa, who went untouched into the end zone with 35 seconds left.

Shough finished 24-for-40 passing for 282 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and 101 yards and a touchdown rushing on 23 carries.

Oregon QB Bo Nix threw for 359 yards on 32-of-44 passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for a team-high 46 yards.

Nix put Oregon up 8-7 in the first quarter when he connected with receiver Troy Franklin on a 72-yard scoring strike — a career-high for the junior Franklin.

Nix’s 13-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tez Johnson helped the Ducks build a 15-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, and they took an 18-13 lead into halftime.

Texas Tech outscored the Ducks 14-0 in the third quarter to take the lead.

Oregon’s defense allowed 456 yards and four touchdowns, but they also produced four turnovers, had four sacks and came up with a clutch fourth-down stop in the fourth quarter.

Penalties were an issue for the Ducks, as they were flagged 14 times for 124 yards.
