Nielsen to Measure SVOD Ratings: NBCU, A&E, Disney, Lionsgate, Warner Bros Already on Board

TV ratings giant Nielsen is rolling out a subscription video on-demand (SVOD) measurement tool.

The company already has eight TV networks and production studios signed up for the product, including A&E, NBC Universal, Disney-ABC, Lionsgate, and Warner Bros. Yes, that means their shows can now be measured on Netflix, and that data shared with the public.

Also, participating clients will have access to each others’ streaming ratings, which will aid in negotiations with media buyers.

Nielsen began measuring streaming content in 2014 via an opt-in service. This new tool utilizes audio recognition software to identify what show a panelist is streaming on their television.

“The significant growth of SVOD services in entertainment markets across the world has created demand from rights owners to understand the size and composition of audiences relative to other programs and platforms,” said Megan Clarken, president of Watch, Nielsen. “The syndication of SVOD measurement as part of Nielsen’s Total Audience offerings represents a big step forward in terms of moving closer to transparency within the SVOD marketplace.”
