Few would disagree that the San Jose Sharks were deserving winners of their second-round series against the Colorado Avalanche but they certainly benefited from a controversial decision during Wednesday’s Game 7.

Trailing 2-1 against the Sharks, Nathan MacKinnon set up Colin Wilson with a beautiful pass, which he deposited for the apparent tying goal.

The Sharks weren’t having any of it though and successfully challenged the original decision, which was overturned after the referees determined Gabriel Landeskog rendered his teammates offside. Landeskog was standing at his team’s bench attempting to get off the ice but was still stuck in the attacking zone before the puck entered.

After the Sharks emerged with a 3-2 victory, the NHL released the following explanation for disallowing the goal.

It’s a clear and detailed ruling but that won’t make any Avalanche fans feel better. At least they have another year with one of the league’s most talented cores and the fourth overall pick in this summer’s draft to look forward to.
