Jon Gruden warming to Nathan Peterman

In Oakland Raiders camp, Jon Gruden and company have a battle brewing over chance to back up Derek Carr at QB. The choices are veteran failsafe Mike Glennon ... or Nathan Peterman, infamous Bills turnover machine.

The 25-year-old QB, handed the reins to Buffalo’s offense over a few disastrous stints, threw 12 interceptions to just 3 TDs in 130 passing attempts.

The dismal performance made him the butt of jokes, but this isn’t the first time Gruden has praised the former fifth-round pick. While still working at ESPN prior to the 2017 draft, he said he was “a little smitten with” Peterman coming out of college at Pittsburgh.

“He can memorize, he can execute any play you dream up, and he loves it,” Gruden said at the time.

Fitzpatrick ‘leading the way’ in Dolphins QB battle

Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores won’t be making it easy for young trade acquisition Josh Rosen to win the starting quarterback job. He pronounced veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick the early leader of the competition in camp.

The 36-year-old Harvard alum threw 17 TDs in eight games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. Rosen, drafted by the Cardinals as the 10th overall pick in 2018, is aiming to win the job and prove himself a worthy leader for the rebuilding Dolphins after being jettisoned amid a regime change in Arizona.

Tyreek Hill leaves practice with bruised quad

Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a leg injury in camp and was carted off the sidelines. The speedy star, who recently found out he would avoid NFL discipline over allegations of child abuse involving his son, reportedly suffered a bruised quad.

Kimberley A. Martin has more in her report from Kansas City’s camp.
