NFL: Seattle Seahawks' Devon Witherspoon named Defensive Rookie of the Month for October

After a standout October, Seattle Seahawks defensive back Devon Witherspoon has been named the Defensive Rookie of the Month in the National Football League.

In four games during the month, Witherspoon recorded 17 total tackles (15 solo, 2 assisted). But the game where Witherspoon exploded was on Oct. 2 at the New York Giants, where he had seven tackles, two sacks and a 97-yard pick-six that led Seattle to a 24-3 victory on the road.

Following that game, Witherspoon was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Additionally, Witherspoon, a Pine Forest alum, recorded five passes defended and three quarterback hits in October, playing in a couple different positions, according to the Seahawks’ press release. He played left cornerback and nickel corner.

In Week 7, there was also a sack and interception that were taken away by penalties.

"I never thought he wouldn't play like this," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said after that Week 4 game. "This is why we took him, to be active and to show that he gets this game of football, and it comes easy to him, and he's an explosive, dynamic player… He's showing you who he is."

According to Seattle, Witherspoon is the seventh player in franchise history to be named Rookie of the Month. He joins the likes of Walter Jones, Rocky Bernard, Lofa Tatupu and Russell Wilson. Current teammates Riq Woolen and Kenneth Walker III were named the Defensive and Offensive Rookies of the Month last October.
