Newton girls finish second, boys third at Cardinal Invitational

Dec. 4—Three Cardinal girls finished in the top 10, but Newton fell 13 pins shy of a tournament win during the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday.

Gabbie Humphrey posted a single-game career best in her opening game and then scored a career-best for a series later in the day to lead the Cardinals to a runner-up finish.

Humphrey was second overall on the girls' side, while Sebastian King led the boys in seventh. The Cardinal boys finished third as a team.

Waukee swept the day with wins in both girls and boys. Oskaloosa finished second on the boys' side, while Pella was third in the girls' competition.

The Newton girls led Waukee by three pins after the individual games, but the Warriors held a 742-723 advantage in the Baker games to win by 13 pins.

Waukee won the girls' team title with 2,227. Newton finished second with 2,214 followed by Pella (2,102), Mason City (2,002), Knoxville (1,999), Sigourney/Keota (1,956), Oskaloosa (1,922) and Isaac Newton (1,668).

Humphrey's opening game was a career-best 236. Her 136 in the second game put her series at a career-best 362. That only trailed Pella's Taylor Walker, who won the individual gold medal with a 422 series.

Maria Baxim's varsity debut equaled a seventh-place finish with a 321 series. She had single games of 159 and 162.

Genessa Slings finished eighth overall with a season-best 311 series. She had single games of 129 and 182.

Libbie Keith (253) had single games of 131 and 122, Kelly Holmes posted a career-best 244 series following single games of 134 and 110. Aeris Archer made her varsity debut and posted a 206 series after single games of 75 and a 131.

Knoxville's Cassidy DeMaderios finished third with a 349 series, Oskaloosa's Kaylee Haugen was fourth with a 345 and Waukee's Wren Starmer finished fifth with a 337.

Oskaloosa's Trey VanWyk won the boys individual gold medal after posting a 495 series. He had single games of 269 and 226. Waukee's Sam Kock was next with a 482, Sigourney/Keota's Brock Alderson placed third with a 443, Oskaloosa's Jacob Schutz took fourth with a 441 and Waukee's Riley Ostrem placed fifth with a 434.

King's season-best 422 series included single games of 185 and 237. That was good enough for seventh, while Owen Guldberg's 400 series placed him ninth. He had single games of 207 and 193.

Tamion Adams had the most consistent day with single games of 195 and 197 for a 392 series. Andrew Wiles posted a 362 series with single games of 183 and 179.

Austin Kennedy had single-game scores of 168 and 176 for a 344 series. David Holmes played on the varsity squad for the first time this season and posted a 314 series with single games of 183 and 131.

Waukee won the team tournament title with 3,174 pins. Oskaloosa was next with a 3,115 and Newton posted a 2,948 in third. All three teams had Baker scores of more than 1,000.

Sigourney/Keota finished fourth with 2,821, while Pella was fifth with 2,766. The rest of the eight-team field included Mason City (2,659), Knoxville (2,585) and Isaac Newton (1,988).
