Newton boys overcome first-quarter deficit against Bondurant-Farrar

Feb. 15—BONDURANT — The Newton boys' basketball team rallied from a first-quarter deficit against Bondurant-Farrar on Tuesday.

Balanced scoring and just four turnovers helped the Cardinals down the Bluejays 58-57 on the road during a non-conference contest.

Bondurant-Farrar led 21-12 after one quarter, but Newton rallied behind strong nights from Caleb Mattes and Caden Klein.

Mattes led the Cardinals with 14 points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals and Klein added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Cade Bauer also scored a career-high 11 points and added three rebounds and two assists. Christian Lawson posted nine points, seven boards and two assists and Nate Lampe totaled four points, two rebounds and three assists.

Christian Ergenbright tallied three points and four rebounds and Hunter Teague scored four points.

Newton (10-10) shot 42 percent from the floor, made 6-of-20 from 3-point range and buried 6-of-10 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals outscored Bondurant-Farrar 46-36 after the first quarter.

Jerze Simonson led the Bluejays (11-9) with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Tanner Berggren put in 18 points.

The Bluejays shot 45 percent from the floor, made 6-of-18 from 3 and buried 9-of-11 from the foul line.
