Seau autopsy shows sleep aids, but no drug abuse

Traces of a drug used to treat insomnia were found in the blood of former NFL linebacker Junior Seau, but there were no signs of drug or alcohol abuse, according to the autopsy report issued by the Office of the Medical Examiner of the County of San Diego.

Seau, 43, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Oceanside, Calif., home on May 2.

He suffered from insomnia in the months leading up to his suicide and often took strong sleep aids, not always as directed, according to friends, USA Today reported in June. Seau had insomnia problems for at least the final seven years of his life.

Tissue from Seau's brain was taken to the National Institutes of Health for researchers to study possible head injuries sustained by Seau during his 20-year NFL career, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported last month.
