Schiano: Bucs 'only have one' quarterback

If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did not previously sound sold on Josh Freeman, their quarterback entering the final year of his contract, they do now.

The Bucs invested a third-round draft pick in North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon, but training camp isn’t going to open with the Bucs conducting a competition to see who wins the starting job.

“We only have one (quarterback),” Bucs coach Greg Schiano said on the NFL Network’s “Total Access.” “It's Josh Freeman.”

Schiano has spoken positively about Freeman during the offseason but an up-and-down 2012 season has the team’s former first-round draft pick at a crossroads. If he puts it together this season, the Bucs will have to invest in him moving forward. If he doesn’t, well, then Glennon will have an opportunity and Tampa will likely have to look elsewhere for help too.

“I believe in competition, and Mike Glennon is going to be a tremendous quarterback in his time," Schiano added. "But we have a quarterback, it's Josh Freeman. He had a really good spring. I think it's really coming together, being in this system for a second year now and hearing the things over again after being able to study it, I'm really encouraged.

“I know Mike Sullivan, our offensive coordinator, he's encouraged. We're looking forward to big things. Josh is going to have a big year.”
